Book Description

1606230344 978-1606230343 January 16, 2009 1

Most of the literature on learning disabilities and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) focuses on the needs of elementary school–age children, but older students with these conditions also require significant support. Comprehensive and authoritative, this book helps educators and clinicians navigate the maze of laws, policies, and scientific research relating to diagnostic and intervention decision making for adolescents and adults. Leading expert Noël Gregg provides clear guidance on how to conduct and document evidence-based assessments and select appropriate instructional and testing accommodations. Featuring helpful case vignettes, decision-making flowcharts, and coverage of the latest assistive technologies, the book gives special attention to supporting students during the crucial transition from high school to higher education or vocational settings.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gregg's timely work contrasts the intensive services delivered to children with learning disabilities and ADHD to the relative dearth of efforts for these individuals as they transition into adulthood. Often unrecognized, minimized, or ignored, this 'silent epidemic' results in considerable cost to the individual and society. Thorough yet accessible, the book presents systemic assessment and intervention strategies designed to accommodate these individuals' learning and psychosocial needs."--James B. Hale, PhD, Department of Psychology, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

"Written by an expert in the field, this book is coherent and insightful. Gregg's coverage of up-to-date research is comprehensive, and she has an exceptional ability to identify and describe practical applications. The book meets a tremendous need."--H. Lee Swanson, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology and Peloy Chair, University of California, Riverside

"A great resource in an area that has many challenges. I particularly like the way the solid research base is translated into implications for assessment and accommodation. Loaded with valuable information, this book fills an important gap in the literature."--Martha L. Thurlow, PhD, Director, National Center on Educational Outcomes, University of Minnesota

"An exceptionally well-written, detailed, authoritative, and science-based review of appropriate educational accommodations for teens and adults with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, and the documentation needed to obtain them. It is the best contemporary treatment of this topic available. The book is rich with useful recommendations pertaining to multiple aspects of individual functioning, including cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral, and academic domains. Highly readable, instructive, and punctuated with informative case examples, this book should prove beneficial to clinicians, educators, and graduate students."--Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina

"A welcome volume....Not only does the book provide comprehensive summaries of research on an array of learning issues, but also links the research to useful suggestions for educational interventions and accommodations for learning impairments in adolescents and adults. It is an extremely useful handbook that will be relevant for years to come for practicing neuropsychologists as well as for practitioners in related professions who help secondary and post-secondary students with ADHD and/or learning disabilities....Pragmatic and clear suggestions for accommodations and interventions, including the use of various illustrated decision trees to guide decisions, make the book a useful resource for educators and clinicians on the frontlines who are working with adolescent and adult students. Of particular interest were reviews of existing and emerging assistive technologies that permeate the chapters....A gem of a book that has something useful to offer experienced neuropsychologists, other clinical or educational professionals, and advanced graduate students. In the spirit of the guiding theme of the book, every reader will come away with having learned something new from this volume."--Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology

"With her extensive specialization in adolescents and adults with LD and ADHD, Dr. Gregg unravels the complexities of secondary and postsecondary school environments and clarifies the needs of these students. She brings confidence and an evidence-based validity to her conclusions and recommendations. This is a resource book that can guide and inform decision-making by professionals working with secondary and postsecondary students. In addition to its discussion of historical policy and current regulations, this book is a well-organized guide to the analysis of reading, mathematics, and behavioral–emotional assessments and accommodations. It is a comprehensive, well-thought-out book, appropriate to both the college classroom and the consulting office, which focuses on a subject that only recently has captured the spotlight yet promises to be important in the years to come."--The Educational Therapist

5.0 out of 5 stars a cogent, comprehensive and insightful analysis, December 23, 2009

First to review, but I'm not a shill -- merely an involved parent.

This is an exceptionally valuable reference for professionals, academics and invested laypersons. This is not a casual read. The book is wonderfully concise -- no fluff here.

For professionals and academics, it contains a wealth of references -- of the ~300+ pages, ~250 are text, 10 are index, and a full 55 pages are references to other texts and journal articles. The book is worth purchasing for the references alone.

Professor Gregg documents ADHD & LD research, offers her own cogent analysis & insights, and provides practical recommendations for navigating the relevant legislative and therapeutic frameworks.

The only noteworthy omission is that the book, probably by design, contains virtually no discussion of medication. One must look for that discussion elsewhere.

The net result is that this book has helped & continues to help me to intelligently, knowledgeably and helpfully engage the professionals I work with to assist my son in leveraging his strengths and manage his deficits.

Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource for Both Professionals & Lay People, June 23, 2011

This review is from: Adolescents and Adults with Learning Disabilities and ADHD: Assessment and Accommodation (Hardcover)
I learned about this book - used as a textbook - via an online course "Adults with Learning Disabilities", offered by the civil rights legal counsel for our state. I had already completed a master's degree and other extensive graduate training specifically about Adults with Learning Disabilities. I was also already a professional working for the state with adults at community colleges. Even with all this background, this book by Noel Gregg, introduced me to the best and most comprehensive resource I have ever found on this topic. This book is top-notch and should be in the library of every professional working with adults (and even grades K-12) with learning disabilities. It is well-organized, has a great index to easily reference specifics, lots of summary charts on chapter topics, decision-making flowcharts for determining appropriate accommodations for specific processing deficits, legal implications, etc. etc. It is very user-friendly and well-written, so much so that even a lay person could probably get a lot out of it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!!
