This review is from: Adolf Hitler a Short Biography (German history series) (Paperback)
If you're cruising along on the roadway of life and have only a scant hour or so to devote to Hitler, then this is the book to read! Even a slothful and plodding reader can rip through this book in under an hour. There is nothing new or earth-shattering here and any marginal student of Hitler will know everything between the pages of this book already. The photographic selection is also weak, the maps non-existent. However, there is some merit here: the author writes reasonably well and doesn't fall into the insidious "Freudian trap" of putting Hitler on the couch, or believing everything in the OSS reports from World War II. Thus Tames eschews, thankfully, the "carpet chewing" caricature of Hitler and instead relies on a more steady, sober viewpoint: he was a psychopath but appeared amazingly normal to his hapless entourage. He was neither a sexual pervert, a syphillis-infected lunatic or a homosexual voyeur. Actually, Hitler's private life was the most banal and pedestrian thing about him. To sum up, if you're a long-standing student of the Fuehrer, you would know everyting in the book. But for a beginner, this has some limited merit. So speed readers, get on your mark, get so, go! |
