This book is a careful study of the life of Adoniram Judson. I would recommend this book to anyone who is tired of hagiography, and looking for a realistic history of the early Baptist missions movement in America. I would also recommend this book to missionaries already on the field, for inspiration and encouragement, and to those considering a missionary career.

Overall a worthwhile read although some chapters are stronger than others. In particular, the chapter on Hudson's wives was immensely encouraging and, alone, worth getting the book.

Format: Paperback
While not the typical linear biography, this collection of accounts describes the life and ministry of Adoniram Judson with intimate detail. The treatments help the reader to identify with Judson in that the authors have included both valiant and unflattering aspects of his personality. They inspire the reader through Judson’s victories, but offer a window into his pains and even near destruction in his darkest hour. This presentation of the life of Adoniram Judson humbles the reader and causes him to examine his own motivations and calling. Though there are some deeper theological ideas covered in the background information, the book is easy to read, and would be an inspiring and educational undertaking, whether one is a student of theology or an interested layperson.

I found this book very helpful for fanning my flame for global missions. Not only is it exciting that the book was released on the bicentennial anniversary of the departure of the father of modern day missions, but the look into his life and ministry is very convicing and inspiring.
