Book Description

February 28, 2009
Set around the time of the Great Depression, this poignant story redefines love and "family." Her heart longed for a place to call home. Bernice was only six the night she and her brother were brought to the State School for Dependent Children. They had been taken away from their mother before and placed in foster homes, but somehow this felt different. Little did Bernice know that her mother had signed away custody of her, and she wouldn't leave that orphanage for two years. People weren't adopting children in 1929, but that year eight-year-old Bernice was adopted into one of the finest homes in rural Bloomington, Minnesota. She was told she's lucky to be adopted, while others will live out their childhoods in the orphanage. But she's worried. What will her new life be like? Will she ever see her brother again? And do these people really want her?

A sensitive story about an adopted girl who asks the troubling questions of most adopted children, and finds satisfying answers. The setting is the Great Depression and WWII -- historically a difficult time, but for this family a kinder, gentler time wrapped in love and learning -- a time worth reading about. Recommended for age 10 through adult. (No indiscretion, no violence, no bad language. A rare find.)

The Adoption Club is an easy, quick, delightful read, which i loved! It gave me a nostalgic, warm feeling of the holidays and a sense of what the depression era was like. I could smell, taste and feel every bit!

Great book! Not something I normally read, but because I know Barbara Scott and knew her mother, (whose life this book is modeled after) I couldn't wait to read it! I enjoyed it emensely! I couldn't put it down once I started, felt I knew someone in a deeper way and understood adoption through new eyes. Barbara has always been sensitive to others feelings and needs and those qualities make this book a great read and a great product. I would highly recommend this book, especially for someone who has experienced adoption!
