Must Reading For All Touched By Adoption,
By Blair "blair52" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Adoption Triangle: Sealed or Opened Records: How They Affect Adoptees, Birth Parents, and Adoptive Parents (Paperback)
This is one of the finest books ever written on the subject of adoption. Reading this book, in my opinion, is one of the best gifts that any adoptive parent could give to their child or to themselves. The insights provided by the authors are invaluable in helping adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents alike understand the exquisitely unique and complex issues that adoption "triad" members face throughout their lives. This book dispels a lot of commonly held beliefs and myths about adoption, and provides a sober look at the reality of what it means to be an infertile parent, or a beholding adoptee; and it addresses the myriad of expectations that inevitably lead to hurt and disappointment. Armed with the knowledge and insights revealed in this book, adoptees and adoptive parents can forge a happier life together; and birthparents will find comfort in knowing that others understand their sacrifices. As a reunited birthfather and an advocate for better communications between adoption triad members, I highly recommend this book. Buy it ... it will change your life!

This review is from: The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez (Hardcover)
I read this book when it first came out. It is a must read book for people of all ages. His first was shows the struggles of a young American of Mexican decent making his way in life at an early age. When Roy Benavidez entered the Army he had no idea what was to become of him for the rest of his life. Roy's second war covers his time in the military. His training is explained in this book. His tours of duty are also explained. His courage under fire is really covered very well. He wasn't suppose to be on board a chopper when it went to rescue some fellow soldiers but he jumped on at the last minute to help in any way he could. He soon found himself embroiled in a battle for life--his life. He was one of a very few survivors that fateful day. His struggle to live makes this book. BUT his third war was that of fighting the US Government for recognition of what he had done--and yet it wasn't he who was doing the fighting--it was those others who survived who wanted him honored. It took more than a decade but he finally received the Medal of Honor. As a footnote to this review--a ship was named for him and christened on 21 July 2001. The USNS Roy P Benavidez will no doubt see action in a war just like its namesake.

The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez,

This review is from: The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez (Hardcover)
The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez is a story of the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the personal war for recognition experienced by Roy Perez Benavidez, American Hero. Roy's radio call handle was TANGO-MIKE-MIKE (TMM) which stands for a term of both teasing and respect... "That Mean Mexican" Roy's reputation as TANGO-MIKE-MIKE was tested most when he reacted to a radio call for help from a South Vietnam infantry patrol under heavy fire. The patrol was led by fellow members of Roy's Green Beret unit and was facing ten-to-one odds against soldiers from the North Vietnam Army. Armed with his knife and grabbing a medical bag Roy charges onto one of the evacuation helicopters just as it begins to take off. While under withering gun fire, Roy jumps out of the chopper and runs to his comrades aid. He organizes scared and confused troops to fight back against the waves of attackers. He carries and drags wounded onto the helicopters, being wounded multiple times in the process. He killed an enemy soldier in hand-to-hand combat and nearly dies getting his troops back to base. Roy was so badly wounded that he was mistaken for dead. Paralyzed, the only way he could keep the Army doctor from proclaiming him dead and sealing him up alive in a plastic body-bag was to spit blood in his face! I met Roy in the office of Jane Patton (now my wife) in 1974 when she crafted the Medal-Of-Honor (MOH) package for Roy. Roy looked like a professional soldier and yet had a kindness of heart. During the presentation of Roy's MOH, President Ronald Reagan commented on the citation stating that Hollywood could not write a more incredible story than the exploits of Master Sergeant, Roy Benavidez. Roy has been honored in many ways for that heroic day in the jungles of Vietnam. Even though Roy passed away, to this day whenever a Special Forces soldier needs desperate help against over-whelming odds he calls for TANGO-MIKE-MIKE.

American Hero's Story,
By "rruben" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Three Wars of Roy Benavidez (Hardcover)
Excellently written book of the last medal of honor recipient (at that time) of the Viet Nam war. The award was presented by Ronald Reagan in 1982. Chilling account of the battle that earned Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez the Medal of Honor. Read about his boyhood life in Texas and his rise through the ranks to become a Green Beret, Special Forces soldier. Learn of his devotion to "duty, honor, country," the words he lived by. You will not believe his act of courage and bravery as he set out to save a trapped and doomed patrol of 12 men that had been inserted into the jungle, unbeknown to the command, amongst a battlion of over 300 Viet Cong soldiers. Although at a base camp in Loch Ninh, he disregarded his own safety and ordered the chopper to fly him into the fire fight. The book accurately describes the battle and Benavidez's heroism. His actions where one of the bravest in the annals of U.S. military history. Oscar Griffin is a great writer who does an excellent job of bringing the story to us. He utilizes his talent and skill in the use of the written word to not just bring us an historical account, but a story of great magnitude to life. The story keeps you riveted from beginning to end. It's more than a story of a soldier, it's a story of an American Hero.

The reality of adoption,
By
This review is from: The Adoption Triangle: Sealed or Opened Records: How They Affect Adoptees, Birth Parents, and Adoptive Parents (Paperback)
Touching on a current, pervasive, yet unfamiliar subject, the authors bring to light the intricacies of the adoption triad and the difficulties faced by all involved. From an adoptive parent's perspective, the nature of the relationships can be complicated. With the proper communication mechanisms, whether records are sealed or open will have little impact on the individuals involved and, I think that area has not been addressed in the book. However, that is not to say it is unworthy of reading. Those who are not members of the triad, or object to adoption, cannot regard this book with true sincerity and those involved can achieve a better understanding of all parties invovled.

Those newly realizing the problems of adoption will benefit.,
By JDelBalzo@aol.com (Jessica DelBalzo) (New England, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Adoption Triangle: Sealed or Opened Records: How They Affect Adoptees, Birth Parents, and Adoptive Parents (Paperback)
The stories contained in this book provide further reasoning for outlawing adoption altogether, although the authors mean to support the open records movement. They are certainly accurate in pointing out that, where adoption is concerned, a change is necessary. Unfortunately, their alterations are too minor to solve most of the problems adoption creates. This book would be good reading for anyone who has recently begun to accept that adoption is not a perfect (or even remotely GOOD) solution for unplanned pregnancy.
