Book Description

March 1, 1999
Take a sock, fill it with stuffing, add yarn hair and facial features and dress it up - sock dolls can be simple to make. This book offers general instructions on how to make a sock doll, and also shows how to customise a doll.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It is such a simple, old-fashioned concept, if truth be told, that it is a surprise no one has resurrected the sock-doll craft--until now. Mother-daughter team Stone and Lowe have obviously perfected the how-tos; like most Chapelle-generated books, theirs begins by telling all--materials, tools, and the basic shaping and attachment instructions. Then the more than 35 projects build on the first chapter, with dolls fashioned on zoo and farm creatures as well as anthropomorphic beings (Santa, babies, Mr. Shivers the snowman, etc.). Color photographs are plentiful, yet it can be difficult to separate one doll's directions from the next. Metric conversion chart included. Barbara Jacobs

About the Author

The authors, Emola and Connie, are a mother daughter team that has been crafting together for more than 20 years. They started by making crafts for theirhomes, and immediately demand from family and friends meant that they were making dozens of replicas of each project. Eventually, they started a small craft business, Heart to Art, which sells their finished projects as well as craft supplies. With their projects in great demand, they are kept very busy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adorable Indeed!, February 18, 2001

This review is from: Adorable Sock Dolls to Make & Love (Hardcover)
I checked this book out from the library and within 2 days have decided to purchase it. This book is beautifully illustrated with color photos and has large print, easy to read instructions. (I do agree that the projects seem to run together.) The term "dolls" is misleading, as they include everything from zoo/farm animals to clowns and snowmen. The book offers baby-friendly instructions, but I am disappointed that most of the photos only show the dolls with "over 3 years" eyes and noses. I do appreciate the tips, stitching illustrations (although some of these are confusing for a true beginner), and the essential/important information underlined for clarity.

I have to admit that I have not actually tried any of the projects, but I have already made a shopping list for 6 of them. I think those with a crafty streak will find that these sock dolls give store-bought beany babies a run for their money! I look forward to giving them as gifts.

After reviewing just about every book written on sock dolls from the library, I can recommend this one highly. The instructions are clearly written and illustrated. The dolls and animals, absolutely adorable. If you only buy one sock book, this is definitely the book to purchase.

CUTE, CUTE, AND YES, MORE CUTE! I was going to make some things for a special event at a convention but time got away but maybe next year I will try harder to make some sock dolls from this book. Did I mention they were very cute!. And they do not look that difficult to make. Thank you, Alice
