So...another "not as good as canon" review.
Canon costs a lot more. It's generally better built. You pay for that. I wish now that I did. This one works but it's not as snug as a Canon, and it won't go on backwards for storage the way a Canon would. I find that I am constantly re-twisting it straight from getting bumped out of alignment. A little gaff tape fixes that, but gaff tape is just a hack. It works, it fits, it's not quite as perfectly fit or nicely finished as the fully branded version.

This hood came with a 17-55 IS lens that I bought used. I previously used a 17-85 IS with an Canon hood. This hood is effective at reducing glare and offering some lens protection.
Compared my former Canon hood, it doesn't lock into place as well - sometimes it doesn't snap fully. This usually happens when I'm in a hurry to get a shot and results in a vignette that I don't always notice until afterwards. The Canon version is also lined with felt while this is just plastic on the inside. But for the money, it does the job.

After purchasing a 17-40L lens I learned that with the 1.6 crop body cameras, the stock hood for that lens didn't work very well to prevent flare. So I did a little research and found that this hood would work for it and cause no vignetting. This is true, after months of use, I have not had any issues with vignetting and also less issues with flare than I would have expected with the stock lens hood.
I only have a few complaints. This hood fits really tightly on the lens hood mount. It is to be expected that it wouldn't be perfect since this is a third party manufacturer. Also, unlike the canon hoods, this one doesn't have the felt lined interior which leads you to feeling it is of lower quality, but it is a matte finish on the inside. Overall, it saves you around 20 dollars to forgo purchasing the canon brand, but you might find yourself wishing you had gotten the other one if the tight fit and build quality become issues for you.
