Have you ever read a book that took your breath away with the freshness of its perspective? That is how I responded to Adoration by Martha Kilpatrick. It is an astonishing portrayal of Mary of Bethany.

Just about the time I think I have heard it all, the Lord uses someone to resuscitate my lagging insight. I have always believed that Mary chose the better part when she deliberately sat at the feet of Jesus, yet I also credit Martha with a productive contribution. But after reading Adoration I realized I missed the point. For example, the author states:
To make a noisy display of your labors is to perform for the audience of humanity.

Ouch! Martha is not the only who has done that...I have too. More times than I care to mention I have tooted my own horn or whined about others' lack of appreciation of my efforts.

Here is another line from Adoration that really struck a cord:
Work is the sorry god whose reward is strangely empty. It never pays the wage of love that is anticipated.

How true! It is like pulling up a bucket from an empty well.

This is a small book with powerful content. I find myself returning to it again and again.

At one time, I had over 16,000 Christian books in my Pastoral library. I searched for them all over world. Some were good, some great - but only 5 had real, personal, revelation of Jesus Christ. This book is one of the 5.

I have been so completely impacted by this book. My heart has sought the Lord, yet I have yearned to love Him more. Adoration has touched my very passion for Jesus, and called me higher, to a place of surrender and focus. In a world that demands fast paced activity to meet deadline and standard. And/or to please ones self or others, a simple life and our true Reward get lost. Martha writes in this book about Mary of Bethany and all those around her, but more than that she writes in a style that causes the heart to meditate on the very Jesus Mary focused upon. A book for everyone, men as well as women. I recommend it very highly, for all who would love Him or love Him more.
