5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful piano solos for fans of spiritual and new age music, July 25, 2008

(VINE VOICE)
This is one of David Nevue's strongest albums to date. I am primarily a fan of contemporary solo piano music (aka new age), and I had much less familiarity with hymns, so I was not sure what to expect from this album. I was thus delighted to discover that the arrangements on this album are absolutely lovely and should please fans of both spiritual music as well as new age fans.

All the tracks are strong, so it is hard for me to pick favorites, but if forced I'd nominate "Fairest Lord Jesus," "Doxology," "Just as I am," "Be Still My Soul," and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." Nevue's arrangements add his signature style to traditional songs to create a unique blend of refreshing rhythms and counterpoints. He also does not make the mistake of confusing "complicated and showy" with "better." Take, for example, his arrangement of "Amazing Grace," which is about as spare and simple as a piano solo can possibly be, consisting almost exclusively of single notes in the melody and bass lines. But Nevue has arranged it in a way that is hauntingly beautiful and leaves you with chills down your spine.

As with Nevue's other albums, one of the appealing features of his music is that he has made exact transcriptions of many of the pieces on this album available for purchase from his website, so if you are a pianist you can play them as arranged on the album.

Trying to pick a favorite David Nevue album is sort of like trying to answer the question of which of your children is your favorite... you love them all, in different ways. I would probably say this is my second favorite album, after "Overcome," and I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely adaptations of old favorites, April 16, 2008
I downloaded this album through iTunes for some relaxing Sunday morning music or to study by, since I can't read when I'm listening to music with lyrics. It wasn't long, however, before I started paying more attention to the lovely arrangements of these old hymns.

The song selection on this album is fantastic, including some of my favorites: "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less," "Be Still My Soul," "Come Thou Fount," and "There Is A Fountain." The arrangements are fresh and inventive without distracting from the original melodies. Kudos to Mr. Nevue for respecting and reinventing the beautiful hymns of the faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!, February 3, 2009
This cd has been a huge blessing to us. We keep it going in the car almost all the time. David has a simple way of expressing himself through his piano as he shares the beautiful and timeless melodies of the hymns. We highly recommend this title!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, May 3, 2009

I discovered this artist on Pandora radio and purchased the album based on the cuts I'd heard there.
I am not disappointed! Calm, comforting renditions of favorite hymns that are recognizable, but with enough of Nevue's personal touch to be 'ear-catching'.
I am now a fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace and Quiet, March 3, 2010

What a great relaxing CD. David is a wonderful pianist whose gentle style puts you at ease right away. Many familar selections are newly arranged so they sound like a whole new song. Though the music is very relaxing it is also very complex and can be listened to many times; hearing new things each time though. It's a wonderful disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful hymns, November 21, 2009

These hymns are nicely done and DO NOT sound new age-y as one reviewer put it. If you like instrumental piano hymns, I also recommend the "Reflections" line through [...]. You can get 60 hymns for $7.77, and there are two sets. That's 120 hymns for less than $20.00, including shipping. Great deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music as worship, January 5, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I discovered pianist David Nevue on the Whisperings Piano website, and purchased this CD for my church. We play recorded music as people are arriving, and familiar hymns on solo piano nicely arranged is perfect for this. I also find myself listening in my office while working, and this music takes me to a peaceful place. Nevue neither plays the hymns straight, nor does he deconstruct them. He creatively interprets them, while retaining the melody all the while. His style is similar to George Winston. Reading the liner notes I discovered how seriously he takes his task of presenting the old hymns in a fresh way. He understands that music does not accompany worship; it is worship.

4.0 out of 5 stars traditional hymns, December 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
By the fact that there are quite a few selections there is not the whole hymn played. What is played is done with traditinal classic style. This was very pleasant to listen to while on the treadmill! It puts the mind into the best of things. This is not for the contemporary music folks, but for those who appreciate the old hymns played with dignity.
