5.0 out of 5 stars Wow., December 6, 1999
By There4IM (Detroit) - See all my reviews

Simply floored. If you like the best things about tech-house, the french sound, the basic channel sound, dub-house, etc. this is the CD. Huge headphone appeal, and very creative use of textures in the production. This will go into heavy rotation at home soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars the sound of a producer on the verge of a breakthrough, August 6, 2000
By Richard Diaz (Centerville, OH United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Adore (Audio CD)
I:Cube is Frenchman Nicholas Chaix, and he makes house music. You just thought of Daft Punk, didn't you? That's okay, they did remix some of I:Cube's previous work. For this album, however, he forgoes the sound of fellow countrymen for more textured, meandering melodies with varied beat styles.

These mellow journeys are exemplified with the opening "Adore" and it's dub sister-in-sound, the closing track "Dans la Piece Vide." The former is filled with dusty breaktbeats and deep synths, the latter muted horns and muted keys; both take you on journeys with no destination but plenty of scenery.

These tunes may define the album, but I:Cube's a musician with the keys to a candy store, and he intends to give everything a try. Some delightfully bleepy chipmunk-voiced stuff here ("La La La,") a handful of blippy techno and filtered disco over there ("The Basic Bastard.") `Tropiq" is smooth mellow dub, with hints of tropicalia. He even tries a batch of Aphex Twin and early Autechre ("Lak," "Caca Carnival".)

It doesn't all work; the electro of "Gastro Funk" and "Might Cube" are just two that don't develop into compelling pieces. Regardless, this artistic schizophrenia showcases the talent of I:Cube, and if it causes havoc with those of us who sub-categorize their record collections, so be it. This is the sound of a producer on the verge of a breakthrough. Grade: B

By "karatemaster" (Birmingham, MI United States) - See all my reviews
Just Say Him Yesterday Here At The Detroit Electronic Music Festival And Amazing Is The Only Word To Describe It. This Man Has Talent And It Shows On This Cd. Not Only That, But Hes Not Afraid To Experiment And Bring New Sounds To The Forefront. You Can't Go Wrong With Any Of His Stuff If You Have And Open Mind And Enjoy Jazz Swirled Tracks.
