Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams. I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams. I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely. Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this. I feel that the fact that I got an 'A' on the exam says very positive things about the text and its ability to prepare you for the testing.

Required reading for a doctorate level class, but a textbook that I enjoyed reading. The writers weave "real world" examples throughout the text that provides the reader with a reference point for the application of theories. There are many visual examples throughout the text that assist the adult learner with understanding the concepts being delivered within each chapter.

This textbook was required reading for a psychology class that I took on Adult Development and Aging. The text is very easy to read - the material covers all the major topics related to cognition, memory, development, illnesses, relationships, and end of life experiences. It provides a solid look at all of these topics without going too deep. I would recommend the book for anyone with aging parents - it is helpful to get a sense of what they are experiencing in their lives and to understand what role we play in supporting them.

I purchased this book for a graduate level adult development psychology class. After reading the first chapter I was immediately disappointed at the level this book was written. It is clearly an undergraduate text. If this book was used in an undergraduate context, this book would be an excellent resource for aging and adult development. Even at the graduate level it did minimally expand my knowledge.

The book is written in an easy to read manner, with color pages and some graphs and pictures. The authors do a good job explaining their concepts in semi-technical terms. Overall, a good resource for undergrad students!

I also purchased this book for a graduate class and was surprised that the level of writing was more akin to my freshman year textbooks. The diagrams presented were mediocre at best and sometimes even difficult to interpret. The most frustrating aspect of this text is that the studies used to validate the author's viewpoints (of which there are many)are several years old. The section of women in the workforce cited work from 1976! But, much of the research was around 10-15 years old. Considering that we live in a society that is undergoing considerable change due to the Baby Boomer generation I found this unacceptable in a textbook. I noticed the purchase price for a new book was around $150. Thankfully, I purchased it used, but even so it was a waste of money. I hope in the future professors will take more time to ensure the texts they use in class reflect current findings without subjecting students to the viewpoints of the text author whether they be liberal or conservative.

Adult Development and Aging by John C. Cavanaugh and Fredda Blanchard-Fields specifically, since there are several books with this title, is chock full of well referenced facts, organized in a comprehensive and interesting way, and written to be, and is, a page turner. And this is a text book!

IF you are considering purchasing this edition instead of the 6th to save money, Please be aware that this edition has some significant changes from the 6th ed. Chapters are rearranged, combined, or eliminated in the newer edition. There is a whole new chapter on neuroscience also. Most of the info is the same however it makes it challenging to follow a course outline for a class when the chapters are different!

I'm using this book for a psychology course I'm in. I was dismayed to see that the photos were in black and white, but that's not a huge deal, just unusual and a little cheap looking. Makes me want to test for performance differences in people who read books in color vs black and white. Anyway, that's not the issue I have with this book. My issue is with the organization. I have never had to take notes in a non-linear manner before. I have to go back and insert info into previous sections/definitions, and I'm never sure when I have read all the info about a particular topic or if it will crop up again later. Some words in bold never get defined. Some statements can be interpreted in multiple, completely different ways (like the statement that "processing resources" are the resources that "one has to apply" to a situation. Is that "needs to apply" or "possesses to apply?" I hope they fixed this for the 6th edition.
