Book Description

August 1998 1575240157 978-1575240152 2nd
With the addition of seven new chapters, this second edition provides the educator of adults with aspects of understanding and facilitating adult learning as well as a variety of methods and techniques that can enhance the instructional and learning process in many educational settings. The book is designed for the practitioner and is written from a practical "how-to" perspective. Its premise is that by acquiring a greater understanding of the process of helping adults learn and the methodologies that can enhance this process, teachers and adult learners can increase their chances of sharing a positive, meaningful, and developing educational experience.

"This second edition of Adult Learning Methods by Michael Galbraith and associates represents a landmark in the presentation of available adult learning methods and techniques...[it] illustrates the stability as well as the changing nature of strategies for enhancing teaching and learning efforts...not only a how-to-do it book, but a what-to-do-and-why guidebook. This is the only book I know that delivers such in-depth information about adult learning methods and techniques. It presents a state-of-the-art picture of adult education methodology for educators of adults who work in a multitude of learning settings."-- Malcolm S. Knowles, from the Foreword.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Teachers of Adult Education, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Adult Learning Methods: A Guide for Effective Instruction (Hardcover)
Michael Galbraith has done an outstanding job of compiling written work by several noted authors and making it available in one book. Rita Kolody focuses on Guidelines for Selecting Methods and Techniques. Gary Conti has written an excellent chapter on Identifying Your Teaching Style. Stephen Brookfield's focus in on Discussion. Shirley Farrah spotlights the Lecture. Internship is covered by Susan B. Fremont and Mentorship is covered by Laurnet A. Parks Daloz. Many other authors have contributed equally outstanding chapters. A major theme of this book is understanding the adult learner. Psychological characteristics are explored as well as cognitive and personality characteristics of the adult learner. The chapters are well written, easily understood, and references are documented. Upon reading this book, the teacher can utilize the knowledge from each contributing author and make an informed selection of which method and technique may have the greatest chance of professional satisfaction for success for the learners. The information in this book is thought-provoking and stimulating for any teacher who desires to improve his/her own teaching-learning transaction.
