Review

Sarah Nicole Prickett's Adult, the first feminist sex magazine that is both feminist and sexy. (Chris Kraus Sydney Review of Books 2014-10-17)

Now that the days of secreting Playboy under the proverbial mattress are long gone, a new art triannual is giving life to print erotica. Edited by Sarah Nicole Prickett, with contributors inclunding Stephanie LaCava, Rachel Kushner, and Cord Jefferson, Adult is a feminist take on a dirty magazine, complete with salacious photo spreads. One of their bylaws declares, " In every photo editorial, the model is the subject, not the object." (Alison S. Cohn Elle Magazine 2013-12-01)

The first issue reads as if The Paris Review married Hustler. Erotic photography by Kava Gorna runs alongside an art portfolio by Wangechi Muttu. Literary phenom Rachel Kushner shares her e-mails; Katherine Bernard pens an essay about Erica Jong's Fear of Flying. (New York Magazine 2013-11-25)

Adult - a new magazine "of contemporary erotics and experience" - celebrated its first issue with a party in Chelsea last weekend. The party promised free drinks, free candy, and free porn; invitations admitted "you plus two." The magazine itself suggests a similar spirit of exuberant debauchery. Its inaugural issue includes a photo spread of models masturbating, a recipe for fried-oyster omelets, fiction, profiles of filmmakers, plus "new and recent poems by poets we'd like to fuck." (Molly Fischer Nymag.com 2013-10-30)

"I wanted Adult to feel like a secret," she [Sarah Nicole Prickett] said about the quarterly magazine, which will hit select newsstands, including Marc Jacobs's bookstore, BookMarc, and the Museum of Modern Art, in mid-November. Despite the "Not for sale to minors" disclaimer on its cover, Prickett isn't shy about hoping the young and curious find it, even if they have to steal it. "I want to go on the record as being very pro-minors," she said. "I love teen girls. I wish I could have been one - I was awful at it. The best I can hope for is the feeling I had as a teen, which is that I couldn't wait to get older. I want people to feel like that until they're 70." (Alainna Lexie Beddie The NY Times Style Magazine 2013-10-28)

Disappointing. So much hype, such a let-down.

Modestly interesting articles. Photoshoots that had potential but were too blurry and underexposed. (Oh- wait- that's arty.)

Good parts:
1. The quality of the paper is really good.
2. The first pages written in the form of personal ads, about the contributors, was clever and interesting.
3. One story about a babysitter was hot.

Maybe this magazine will get better with subsequent issues- the contributors are talented- but it just didn't live up to my expectations.

Poor production for a magazine. Paper quality was poor, reproduction of photos just not what you'd expect for a magazine that costs this much. Even writing was not top notch. Who cares what the different editors have in their traveling suitcases. Some of the poetry was good, and even the masturbation photos were a new take on an old subject. Adult is a sophomoric attempt at creating a modern day adult magazine.

I ordered the magazine. Payment was done in late November...It is going to be March in 5 days. They said they shipped magazines in early Dec (from Jan email). Wrote in late December and never got response. Wrote in Mid January. They responded then and said they were going to ship replacement. A month later, nothing. I wrote again and no response after a week.
Maybe it is a good thing I never got it with all the disappointment reviews from people that actually got the magazine. My credit card bank is dealing with them now. The reputation of Ms Prickett, the editor/owner(?), will definitive suffer from all the complaints. It looked like a promising magazine. It seems that it was badly executed.

What an awesome magazine. Beautiful layouts, great photography, even better writing. Way to go SNP! I bought the very first issue, and will definitely buy it again. Looking forward to seeing this magazine grow!

with the rise and fall of so many magazines, you have to be pretty stellar to get noticed, that ... or have naked ladies.

I was hoping this was going to live up to the hype ... read it, and gave it away.

Some of the photos are stunning though, a couple photographers I knew from Tumblr, if it was just photos cover to cover they would have had no trouble whatsoever, but the articles are pretty base, raunchy, and un-inspiring.
