5.0 out of 5 stars A Wild Ride
In my opinion the first track sets a poor tone for the rest of the album. Don't get me wrong, I like the song, but it is the sole reason why the album is labeled "Explicit" (Ok, and maybe the album cover is a little suggestive as it compliments the album title, but this about the music! Right?!?). The songs are catchy and accessible, making you want to listen again and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, the first song is good...
I bought this on the basis that I really liked the drive and lyrical confidence of the first track, California on my Mind. The rest of the album unfortunately doesn't compare. Don't get me wrong, I gave it a chance, but it's really mostly sounding the same and no song catches on. After buying the album, and giving it a few listens, I find I simply don't listen to it after...

In my opinion the first track sets a poor tone for the rest of the album. Don't get me wrong, I like the song, but it is the sole reason why the album is labeled "Explicit" (Ok, and maybe the album cover is a little suggestive as it compliments the album title, but this about the music! Right?!?). The songs are catchy and accessible, making you want to listen again and again and sing along. Granted, the lyrics in songs like "New Hamphshire" are less than earth-shattering, but they hint at something deeper and depressing than the tempo of the song alludes to. The vocals are reminiscent of the Killers and Arcade Fire-esque at times. My favorites are "Call Home," "Heart Attack," "My Father Was a Horse," "Lawless River," and "New Year's Eve." If you enjoy bands like Arcade Fire (makes sense since Timothy Kyle, bassist, was in an early version of Arcade Fire) and Local Natives there is no reason not to get into this band.

I bought this on the basis that I really liked the drive and lyrical confidence of the first track, California on my Mind. The rest of the album unfortunately doesn't compare. Don't get me wrong, I gave it a chance, but it's really mostly sounding the same and no song catches on. After buying the album, and giving it a few listens, I find I simply don't listen to it after track one, and that's the real test.

There are a couple of highlights (if you can call them that) - New Hampshire and Surf Generation have some hooks and are interesting enough, but it's mostly more of the same.

Not bad, but if you were expecting the drive of California on my Mind to continue through the album, guess again.
