I took a piano course at my University and we used this book. There are a lot of fun songs to play in it, and they scale well in terms of difficulty and complexity as the book progresses. I can pretty much play anything in the book now. I'll definitely try out the second book as well.

I've been using the Fabers' Adult Piano Adventures as the text book for a college non-majors beginner piano class. I also use it for certain individual lessons. The students seem to like it and, for the most part, get it. One complaint - we all miss the Sonatina in C that was in the older editions.

I had never played an instrument before, not even knowing how to read music. I'm roughly halfway through this book, but I can now read both bass and treble staff fairly quickly, and I'm able to play simple songs utilizing both hands. This book breaks things down into small chunks and allows you to practice until you're proficient before moving on to the next small chunk. When I finish this I'm definitely going to get Book 2.

As a professional piano teacher (James' Music Studio, Franklin TN), I have used the Faber Piano Adventures series for over 10 years with great success. This volume is what I use for adult students. It is an all-in-one version of the Accelerated method "for the older beginner," which is appropriate for early to mid-teens. I am currently using this for a number of adult students, one of whom has played by ear for years but missed out on the fundamentals of note reading and theory. Amazon had this at a great discount. Highly recommended! However...don't use it as a self-teaching book. Guidance from a qualified teacher and regular lessons (weekly is best) are the only way to go.

I grew up taking piano lessons (~10 yrs) and ended as an early advanced player before high school/college/grad school got in the way. Now that I've started my professional life, this book has made an excellent refresher course after a 15 year hiatus. Easily self-paced through a gradual introduction of topics, I'm combining this with Faber's Piano Literature series, working my way back into playing. The book is well constructed and the spiral binding enables it to easily lay flat on a music stand. I only wish they included a "how to use this book" instructions or given assignments for daily practice. The 3 minute summaries at the end of each unit are what made me choose this over Alfred's. I also like the melodies that are chosen, all recognizable so you already have an idea of what you should sound like, but in no way childish selections.

I definitely would combine this book with professional instruction if I were a beginner. My lessons from my teachers keep resurfacing in my mind as I play, reinforcing the intangibles a book can never teach. Specifically, how to press and lift off the keys to elicit different sounds and attention to phrasing the music. For instance, my middle/third fingers are my strongest and I have to train them not to press the keys harder than my other fingers, so I don't have oddly accented notes. These skills can be taught even with the simple melodies written to teach the theory. Technique is the hardest to learn on your own.

I consider this well worth the $15 retail I paid, even though I worked through the book in 2 weeks. Looking forward to Book 2!

This is my favorite adult piano series. It comes in two levels with or without CDs. I have taught piano for 35 years and have used many books during that time.
This is the best. Theory, technic and songs are included in one book.Adult Piano Adventures All-in-One Lesson Book 1 CD

So far, I've been taking some piano lessons from a friend, and have been using this book, as he recommended. It is very well laid out and organized. It also gives loads of tips along the way, and is easy to read and follow. I've been involved in music in one way or another my entire life, but finally wanted to sit down and really learn (at least at an introductory level) how to play the piano - not by ear, but by reading music. With the help of my friend(teacher) and this book, I now have more confidence when reading music, and particularly with lining up the notes on the piano with the notes on a sheet of music.

Don't be fooled into thinking (from my review) that this book ONLY covers the most basic aspects. It covers many items. I was just already more aware of many of the items, b/c I've already had a background in music in the past. I just hadn't made myself pay attention to what each note was, etc, on sheet music in years. It covers very well, I think: site reading of music, learning to follow rhythm, finding patterns in music, etc. And particularly to this book's praise, I think its' taught me well with little time and effort on my part (I'm shamed to admit).

Conclusion: If you're an adult wanting to learn to play the piano without spending loads of time and money on it, b/c you don't have much of either, then this is great. It also does not make you feel like silly, like you're learning with a child's book. I will admit I did feel silly with a few of the mini-songs played in the book, however, each did help emphasize a particular point in developing the art of piano-playing.
