Book Description

August 7, 2007

Cheat on your husband, not on your diet!

Eva Cassady is stuck in a marriage that's completely lost its luster. She's even envious of her twenty-year-old daughter, living la vie Parisienne (complete with les condoms) in France for a year. Somewhere inside, Eva knows she's still a woman with dreams and desires -- but her whole dull, status-quo existence can be summed up by the tyrannical numbers on her bathroom scale. At 176 pounds, is she just one more invisible, middle-aged woman who will never inspire lust in a man again?

Then fickle fortune -- via her job -- puts Eva back in touch with Michael Foresman, her passionate lover one unforgettable college spring break. Michael seems trÉs interested in meeting up and rekindling some old sparks, but she can't possibly let him see her the way she looks now. With reborn fantasies burning through her blood, Eva starts dieting and exercising like a woman possessed...by passion.

With the pounds dropping away, Eva feels as if twenty years have rolled back as well. She feels young, sexy, desirable...and when Michael arrives, he obviously agrees. So now Eva has to make a choice. When a diet promises to change your life, just how big a change do you really want to make?

To every woman who has ever craved a spoonful of ice cream or agonized over the minefields of romance, this book is for you. It's witty, it's wonderful, it's smart and perceptive. The Adultery Diet is a light-hearted but emotionally honest look at life, love, letting go...and, of course, losing weight.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Midwest-based Cassady's debut features a protagonist also named Eva, an editor for a New York shelter magazine who is a sardonic worrier about the pounds she's put on since her 20s. She's married to David, mother to Chloe (who is about to spend her junior year in Paris). When architect Michael Foresman wins the Pritzker Prize, and Eva's editor finds out that Eva once knew him—they had a passionate, one-week thing in college—Eva is assigned to snag an interview. As the two begin heavily reconnecting via e-mail, Eva starts working out (and enjoying it) in preparation for seeing Michael again. Cassady's novel has inspired moments: Eva's exchanges with best friend Liz and with Chloe are sharp and funny, and the web Eva weaves to separate her real life from her cyberlife rings frighteningly true. Diet and exercise tangents eventually tie in to this smart, hopeful entry into the mom lit market. (Aug.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed It, January 17, 2008
This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
I've often heard it said that when someone in a marriage starts changing drastically, there is often a new love interest involved. That's how it happened in this book. Middle-aged, empty nester Eva reconnected with a man from her past, and from her youth. Merely the thought of seeing him again set her off on an immense personal transformation, evident through her weight loss.

At times the book was embarrassing honest. It was easy to see how women who are taken for granted by their partners respond to affection and attention - especially from someone who knew them when they were innocent, vibrant and young.

It was intriguing to see if she would, indeed, take the plunge into a full-blown affair, and which path she would ultimately take in her life.

A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughed myself thinner, August 31, 2007
This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
In a culture obsessed both with misbehaving and with dieting, what a brilliant idea to bring the two together as Eva Cassady does in The Adultery Diet. It's not the extramarital activity that actually turns the heroine into a lettuce scarfing gym rat, but the desire to reclaim an earlier vision of herself, driven by an internet flirtation with an old lover. A seductive idea for any woman of a certain age. I found the book both laugh-out-loud funny and at moments wincingly honest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun book...hits alittle too close to home at times, September 17, 2008
By
This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
I have this habit of highlighting passages in books that I read. Non-fiction books, that is. However, I looked for my highlighter while reading this book. There are some passages that feature psychology and sociology in the author's observations that are uncanny and feel uncomfortably personal. You almost wince it hits that close to home.

Don't let those possible introspective moments scare you off. The book is entertaining and a fun read. The author skillfully maneuvered a number of emotional minefields for women. I'd love to know what happened to Eva after I finished the last page. Did she do what the odds say she will and regain the weight and fall back into her old patterns or did beat the odds and win by losing.

I'd love a sequel. I felt like the book was a great appetizer.
