I've often heard it said that when someone in a marriage starts changing drastically, there is often a new love interest involved. That's how it happened in this book. 1.0 out of 5 stars I Also Wanted to Like This Book But....
It was so cliched. I don't think that the characters were developed enough to get invested in them. Eva is boring and I never got the impression that she was very into overeating to begin with. I've read other books of this genre and could actually feel the character's interest in food as I read. With Eva it seemed very contrived. Her diet irked me too, but it's all...

I've often heard it said that when someone in a marriage starts changing drastically, there is often a new love interest involved. That's how it happened in this book. Middle-aged, empty nester Eva reconnected with a man from her past, and from her youth. Merely the thought of seeing him again set her off on an immense personal transformation, evident through her weight loss.

At times the book was embarrassing honest. It was easy to see how women who are taken for granted by their partners respond to affection and attention - especially from someone who knew them when they were innocent, vibrant and young.

It was intriguing to see if she would, indeed, take the plunge into a full-blown affair, and which path she would ultimately take in her life.

A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughed myself thinner, August 31, 2007
This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
In a culture obsessed both with misbehaving and with dieting, what a brilliant idea to bring the two together as Eva Cassady does in The Adultery Diet. It's not the extramarital activity that actually turns the heroine into a lettuce scarfing gym rat, but the desire to reclaim an earlier vision of herself, driven by an internet flirtation with an old lover. A seductive idea for any woman of a certain age. I found the book both laugh-out-loud funny and at moments wincingly honest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun book...hits alittle too close to home at times, September 17, 2008

This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
I have this habit of highlighting passages in books that I read. Non-fiction books, that is. However, I looked for my highlighter while reading this book. There are some passages that feature psychology and sociology in the author's observations that are uncanny and feel uncomfortably personal. You almost wince it hits that close to home.

Don't let those possible introspective moments scare you off. The book is entertaining and a fun read. The author skillfully maneuvered a number of emotional minefields for women. I'd love to know what happened to Eva after I finished the last page. Did she do what the odds say she will and regain the weight and fall back into her old patterns or did beat the odds and win by losing.

I'd love a sequel. I felt like the book was a great appetizer.

This is a really good and fast read. I enjoyed it very much and I don't often make through the first 50 pages of most chick lit fiction. Try it - you'll enjoy it. I esp liked how she wrote the novel as if it were a memoir but it is really a novel. Interesting approach that works very well here.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Also Wanted to Like This Book But...., March 22, 2009

It was so cliched. I don't think that the characters were developed enough to get invested in them. Eva is boring and I never got the impression that she was very into overeating to begin with. I've read other books of this genre and could actually feel the character's interest in food as I read. With Eva it seemed very contrived. Her diet irked me too, but it's all too typical of women who barely eat any protein and think they have to starve to lose weight. Jennifer Weiner does a much better job with this kind of fiction.

The best friend is a total cliche: the bitter, nasty single NY career woman. So far the daughter has no personality. The poor husband is a typical non-supportive man who takes his wife for granted. There was no oomph to any of these characters.

And the old boyfriend - please! What an insufferable boor! His opinions on houses and the ocean made me despise him from his first appearance. And a big yawn to the typical NY - LA setting. I am halfway through this light read and that's why I bought it - for a light fun read. But when I can't get invested in any of the characters it's so hard. None of them are interesting enough to care about!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the dieter whose unhappily married but a fun read for others, February 29, 2008
This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
This is a fun, fast read, and if you're struggling with your weight, I think it'll give you some incentive, as well as a few tricks to get and stay thin. Remember, it's fiction girls, but humor has its roots in the truth. Seriously, the narrator makes some saliant points about how women lose themselves in marriage and motherhood, but it's also cute. I enjoyed it, and I've never had a weight problem, so there! ;-)

I loved this book. I read it in less than 30 hours it was so good - I couldn't put it down. It was easy to read, a great storyline, and really described the inner struggle that so many women / mothers face. I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so, August 3, 2007

This review is from: The Adultery Diet (Paperback)
I really wanted to love this book. The storyline is intriguing, I was desperate for a chick lit and I loved the cover and the idea of weight issues.

Although this book is not horrible, the author tries too hard. She seems to want to do half chick lit and half literary prose and although I would love to say it works and gives the book a "smart chick lit" feel to it - the whole thing feels forced.

Still not a horrible read if you can get through the prose. Too bad.
