4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly effective, reasonably sturdy . . .one design flaw.

I am a shovel guy. I have used the low tech, bozo proof and multi-purpose shovel on my daily "Tour de Merde" for decades of picking up after my generally larger furry four legged family members. My dogs share 4.5 acres with me here in Oregon . . .and our daily "Tour" is one of the routines that we count on to give order and meter to our extra-urban life. It also reduces the chance that my playful guys (101 lb. Baxter and 84 lb. Fuddly) will inadvertently step in and then track their poops back into the house. The shovel has proven itself in all situations . . .with the possible exception of tall grass.

Our ritual was recently disrupted by a surgery that put me on crutches for an extended period of time. It quickly became apparent that hobbling over the property on crutches while carrying a shovel was not in my limited skill set. Even the use of a shovel on while balancing on crutches proved problematic. The poop was piling up and I needed to find a one handed tool that could be used while teetering and and carrying a poop bucket. I had previously tried a less well built plastic clamshell scoop with dismal results. They quickly collapsed and broke under the strain of the tasking here. It was with some measure of skepticism, but with a pressing need that I placed my Amazon order for this scooper. I was pleasantly surprised . . .with one exception.

The Good: This scooper works exceptionally well with just one hand. It is built of much heavier plastic than the previous purchases and seems to be holding up with the heavy use quite well. It pulls the poops out of tall grass where a shovel does poorly. It can accommodate multiple pile pick-ups after some practice and skill building, and does have a problem with dropping/escaping poop like other scoopers. It has even had some success with those tricky "runny" offerings. It is easy to clean and feels comfortable to the hand even after extended pick-up sessions. The design is clever and well thought out. It is moderately priced . . .and a better value than many less sturdy tools. The build quality seems superior . . except for the handle pins.

The Notsogood: As others have mentioned, the use of plastic pins in the handle is a poor design choice. They tend to work themselved loose over time and with repeated use and need to be checked frequently and pressed back in. As suggested by a previous reviewer, I will be replacing the plastic pins with small metal nuts, bolts and washers.

This tool still gets frequent use, although now that the crutches are put away I am back to using the shovel for most of the property. I keep this scooper handy for times when the shovel is in use elsewhere or has been left at some distance from the place of pooping. Baxter, Fuddly and I recommend this scooper for anyone not previously disposed toward (or with no compelling need for) a shovel. We have found great satisfaction in a "Poop well scooped" . . .and this tool is up to the task.

This product works great. Nice price. Ive bought two already. One for each house. I sometimes get behind on my pickups in my backyard and with this scooper, i can pick up about 5 separate poo poos (incidents, not individuals.. so thats lots) from my malamute. buy one!

A good product, plastic but practical. It does the job adequately and is fairly priced.

This item is a great time and back saver. I used it today for the first time after I hadn't picked up in my yard for 6 weeks!! (NH snow). I thought it would take me days to clean all the old poop from 2 dogs, but it only took an hour and was actually almost fun to use. I highly recommend this product.

I was very excited when I found this product. However, in action it's very ineffective. More than half of the time I have to manually reach down and push the scoop open. What's the point of this scoop if it won't open and close when I pull or push the handle? I'd suggest you find something that works better - even if it's more expensive. Otherwise, you may be as frustrated as I am when trying to scoop my dog's poop from the yard.

This is really a good pooper picker upper. I had one previously that didn't pick up the dog poop very well. This one has a claw that gets it out of the grass if it's stuck down in the ground. I would definitely recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great Because of Weak Hinges, April 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Advance Poop Scoop (Misc.)
This is about the third pooper scooper we've owned. Our previous scooper finally broke so it was time for a new one. We purchased this one because of the price, longer handle and relatively good reviews.

Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
Relatively affordable
Longer handle than other models
Large scooper capacity for cleanup
One side of the scooper has "teeth" to help scoop up stuff

Cons:
The hinges aren't terribly strong. Doesn't sound like a big deal - but it's more difficult to pick the mess out of the lawn/grass when the hinges don't close around the mess as securely as it should.

If I had it to do over again, I'd order a different scooper. This one does an OK job, but the hinges are very weak compared to other scoopers we've owned. You don't realize how important that is - until you don't have it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Scooper, March 3, 2011

Good product. Solid construction. Could be longer and have a slightly bigger scooper. We have Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and they leave extremely large land mines. On some occasions we have to take a second scoop. Time will tell as it gets used every Saturday.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't stay together, December 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Advance Poop Scoop (Misc.)
I have 2 little dogs so I thought this scooper would work great. I was cleaning up with it and by the time I was about 3/4 done it fell apart. I put it back together and it wouldn't stay. I could see if I had big dogs and their waste was heavier that it might not stay together very well. This is just not made good at all. I wouldn't waste my money on it.
