5.0 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old, January 24, 2005
This review is from: Advance (Audio CD)
This album truly deserves far more notoriety than it has.

If you're a fan of Aphex Twin, Autechre, or simply Abstract Techno in general then Advance belongs on your shelf, without question. The title track is like a baking summer afternoon filled with buzzing cicadas--starkly beautiful and a little bit oppressive. The CD is worth it for this track alone, in my opinion. The intricate, driving beat in "Them" is another highlight. "Tied Up" is the perfect incantation of industrial music--a hard, in-your-face bass(and I do mean Bass! This CD is best enjoyed on a stereo that can handle the bottom end. They don't take the name "LFO" lightly)/snare 4/4 beat surrounded by screeching metal and machine-like buzzes. "Psychodelik" is a beautiful, impossibly intricate melody played over a trance-inducing syncopated rhythm.

One of the things that I like most about LFO is their almost unmatched ability to create sounds that are so harmonically rich that the mind reels. The only other bands I know that have a similar command of timbre are Autechre and Orbital (and Kraftwerk, to a certain extent). Unfortunately, the quality of timbre is impossible to convey in words--"fat" and "warm" and "like a wonderful drill bit into the depths of your soul" simply can't capture the truth.

Given that, I'll end this review this way: Buy this CD. You will not be disappointed.
