5.0 out of 5 stars Advanced Accounting
This is a popular university textbook. I know this because I called several universities for recommendations before purchasing. I've used this book as a professional reference. It is very current on recent pronouncements. The book is well organized, has good examples and it includes many "real world" examples as well

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets for a textbook, October 1, 2008

Let's face it - nobody buys a textbook for fun. That being said, this book is well organized and thorough, which is substantially more than I can say for my professor

4.0 out of 5 stars Great overview, September 3, 2009
This review is from: Advanced Accounting (Hardcover)
I needed it for an Accounting for Specialized Entities course. I have the Principles of Auditing and Other Assurance Services by the same publisher. I love the end-of-chapter multiple choice questions. They are very detailed and truly test the students' knowledge of the material. The chapters read easily (for someone who reads slow). My only complaint is that the chapters on Governmental and Not-for-Profit accounting (Chapters 16-18) don't go into as much detail as is needed for a full course in the subject, but do provide a basic overview of these two types of accounting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wordy and dense, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Advanced Accounting (Hardcover)
This book is about advanced accounting topics such as the consolidation of financial statements, currency translation, partnerships and state and local governments.

The book is wordy. It has few examples and even fewer diagrams. This makes it hard to get a quick overview and you need to read many pages of dense text to understand the underlying ideas of these accounting topics.

I prefer the shorter version of this book titled 'Fundamentals of Advanced Accounting' which is better at giving you an overview, although it too is rather poor overall.

It is called Advanced accounting but the underlying ideas are actually not that complicated. You just have to figure out what goes where in the accounts, how to consolidate, how to account for minority interests, etc. So why are these accounting textbooks so poor, especially when they charge such high prices? I have a research background in the hard sciences where modern textbooks are vastly superior to this book. For example, try looking at a modern college textbook on calculus which is filled with diagrams, drawings and examples to make the student understand the ideas and their application.

PS: This review is for the 9th edition.

This is a really hard book that would probably require you to read it more than once. It is a lot of information to know and remember.

Bought this book for an MBA program, it is real easy to follow with real world examples and complete introduction of understanding today's corporate finance and financial management. there are also examples using excel so that we can understand how to apply it in real life situations. if you need the solutions manual, email me at nugraha69@yahoo.com. it is pretty useful...

1.0 out of 5 stars A Kindle book that cannot be read on a Kindle?, January 9, 2012
I wanted to take a look at the sample edition on my Kindle before making the purchase.

When I tried Amazon opened with the message: "we did not find a Kindle device or reading app registered to your Amazon account for which this content is available". It will only open on a PC, MAC or iPad, not an actual Kindle, Kindle app, or the Kindle reader in Chrome.

Eh???

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Properly Titled, September 22, 2011

Amazon has this Kindle version titled with the Study Guide for the tenth edition of Hoyle & Co.'s Advanced Accounting. You would actually be buying the ninth edition of the textbook. This would be a HUGE mistake if you were looking for the study guide that goes with the tenth edition textbook. Amazon should know better. I'm truly disappointed.
