Editorial Reviews

Review

Bead crafters will feel in control of the projects they make when they consult this informative handbook... A handy reference.
--Creative Products News January 1991

Advanced Beadwork gets directly into the use of beads in creating useful and beautiful items such as ornate necklaces, belts and handbags. It is directed to the serious craftsmen. The emphasis is on the materials, tools and style of needlework required for a project. Descriptions of techniques as loom weaving, bead embroidery and macram are fully detailed with black and white drawings to supplement the text. Part of the book deals with the use of silk or nylon thread for stringing, a portion is devoted to the use of wire, including proper methods of forming, soldering and its application to bead work. An appendix is included which gives general information on the sizes and shapes of beads. The use and characteristics of adhesives as well as a good reference on metals and their composition. This book is not for beginners but for the serious bead-worker.
--Edwin Parkhurst, Jr. Jewelers' Book Club Advanced Beadwork

It has been six years since Poris' first instructional beading book appeared, at a time when a wave of such publications hit the market. Beaded necklaces have now become well established. With the maturation of this field, one expects a parallel development of how-to books. Poris does not disappoint; while her Step By-Step Beadstringing was a small book, the current volume is full-sized, with numerous color and black and white photographs, and an abundance of line drawings. The latter are perhaps the most important element in demonstrating techniques to the reader. The coverage is very comprehensive: threading basics, off loom and loom weaving, bead embroidery, bead needlepoint; macram, crochet and knitting; wire and Chains drilling, sawing and soldering; and appendices. Her inclusion of some basic metalworking techniques greatly expands the creative possibilities for those who string beads. Highly recommended for beginner and advanced beader alike.
-- Ornament Dec 1990

Comprehensive and beautifully illustrated text by the author of the best selling Step-By-Step Beadstringing. Over 300 illustrations and color. Eight chapters teach everything step by step advanced beading, off loom weaving, bead embroidery bead needlepoint wire work, drilling and soldering for necklaces. Detailed appendices include bead and metal charts, stone tests, care and cleaning techniques and the use of abrasives. 152 pages perfect bound.
--Grieger's Inc Nov. 1991

If you are ready to branch out into multiple strands, graduated dog collars, pendants, tassels or lariats, the illustrations and text will help you learn those techniques and a great deal more. The authors' Step-By-Step Bead Stringing is by far the best primer for beginners. This handsome volume assumes familiarity with beadworking terminology and supplies and is not intended as a design manual. Poris leads you through all that's needed to develop expertise in working out construction problems and actually create the forms visualized in your mind's eye. In addition to the detailed chapter on Threading Past The Basics; Instructions for Using Wire & Chain, Drilling, Sawing, Soldering are some of the areas completely covered. These skills, although not difficult to learn, have not previously been accessible in print.
--Ornamental Resources Sept. 1991

4.0 out of 5 stars Techniques and problem solving, September 21, 2000
By
This review is from: Advanced Beadwork (Beadwork Books) (Perfect Paperback)
Important: this is not a design book. You will be disappointed if you want yet another book of beaded amulet bag patterns.

However, if you have moved away from amulet bags and need help in working out problems on your own designs, this is the book to have. It covers beadweaving (off- and on-loom), wire work, soldering, tambour stitching, knitting and crocheting with beads, and a lot of use-it-right-now information on bead sizes, threads, cleaning, stone hardness, metals, and glues.

The shortcoming of the book is that it may be too broad in scope and not deep enough in detail. But that can be an advantage: if you are struggling with a technique, you can learn enough from this book to know what to do next, whether learn a different tecnique, go to a specialist book, or take a class. That's a hugely valuable tool to have. It saves money and time. And for professional beaders, that's a big plus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extreme beadwork, March 31, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Advanced Beadwork (Beadwork Books) (Perfect Paperback)
As it is titled, the book shows a lot of complex beadwork, most being labor intensive designs. Many of the designs are visually interesting, but some of them just strike me as being over the top.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great, December 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Advanced Beadwork (Beadwork Books) (Perfect Paperback)
This book has illustrated instructions and is ok for ideas, but it is not particularly detailed in it's approach. But it does cover a large range of techniques and is good if you want to explore a bunch of different things.
