A bar hustler demonstrates running the table.,

The title is Advanced Billiards, but this tape seems to be an introduction to bar hustling. The star of the movie talks about saloons and taking people's money more than anything. The entire tape centers solely on bar-table 8 ball. He starts by reminding you to chalk your cue and demonstrating the common bridges used, which is hardly advanced. He also claims that mechanical bridges are a rarity in the saloons where he shoots and demonstrates shooting one-handed in lieu of a mechanical bridge. He seems quite accomplished at this, which makes me think he needs to find better bars to shoot in. The tape goes into cut shots, throwing the ball, using draw and follow-through, and other common shots. He demonstrates banking a ball but never discusses methods used the banking. The star also advises to break striking the second ball in the rack, which is an illegal break in most 8-ball league play. It seems that it's perfectly acceptable in bars with no mechanical bridges, however. The star goes on to demonstrate a curve shot and a few caroms. I could have sworn that carom was pronounced 'KARE-om', but the star pronounces it 'ka-ROME'. This must be a saloon pronunciation. More importantly, he breezes over the topic without a solid explanation. The last part of the tape is the star running the table and sinking the 8 on the break several times (using the illegal break). Even as an 8-Ball instruction video, it's sorely lacking. The star talks of his own position on each shot, and makes no mention of defensive manuevering at all. So, the point given is, run the table everytime and you'll win more money. (If only I'd thought of that before I spent 8 bucks on this tape!) It's surely not a 'Complete Introduction to the Wonderful World of Pool' as the jacket claims, and I'm not sure who would benefit from this tape. If you're a serious player looking for advanced tips, this is the wrong place. For the beginning or intermediate billiard player, I would recommend Byrne's or Mosconi's video.
