Book Description

September 12, 2001
A new ocean cruising handbook, Advanced Bluewater Cruising provides a comprehensive guide for coastal cruising sailors wishing to make the step up to ocean cruising.

In an easy-to-use format, Advanced Bluewater Cruising first outlines key differences between coastal and offshore cruising, offers some sound criteria for selecting a boat, and presents the pros and cons of major equipment options. Following chapters include such practical topics as voyage planning, fear as a guide to action, the skipper as leader, crew responsibilities and routines, watchstanding, managing personal affairs (mail, money, bills, emergency contacts), provisioning, stowage and cooking, medical preparedness and more. The weather and up-to-the-minute communications sections will help in interpreting weather systems and in using today's onboard communications tools to get the best forecast information. Sail selection, care and trim chapters will prove useful both before and during ocean passages.

The first two-thirds of the book set forth practical steps to successful passagemaking under sail. The remaining third presents methods of coping with adversity in various forms: heavy weather, illness and injury, dismasting, fire, flooding, with specific sections on troubleshooting your engine, your steering and your electrical system. Illustrated, and with radio frequency lists, watchstanding schedule options, medical prescription information and more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Unique...sections on leadership qualities that any skipper should master...no better text...on the market in recent years. -- Blue Water Sailing magazine, Nov/Dec 2001

From the Publisher

The book is intended primarily for newer bluewater cruising sailors. It will prove useful as well for more experienced offshore cruising sailors. It is a great presentation of all the fundamentals that every sailor should know before heading out on an offshore passage. And there is much up-to-the-minute information on this ever-changing subject. It will make an ideal gift, and its handy size (7x9 1/4", softcover, 320 pages) makes it suitable for home and shipboard use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advanced Offshore sailing guide, ASA108 material, December 22, 2007
This review is from: Advanced Bluewater Cruising (Paperback)
This book was issued to us ASA108 (Offshore Passagemaking) students prior to the required 14 day offshore passage of 1000 nm. The ASA108 course requires you to read a list of books on offshore subjects. Having read the entire list in preparation for my ASA108 certification I have to say that this book includes a good cross section of all the required knowledge. Starting with selecting a sail boat for an offshore passage, over hull stability and righting angles, crew selection, leadership, navigation strategy, weather, medical issues, sail repair all the way to personal affairs are covered in 315 pages. Paperback print makes it easy to travel with and if you want to read one book instead of 8, read this one.
