O.K. Book -- Bad Title,
By A Customer
This review is from: Advanced Chess (Usborne Chess Guides) (Paperback)
This little book is not for strong tournament players! It is a primer for players that know how the pieces move, but know little in the way of strategies or tactics. I don't think it is as good a book for the neophyte as Sierawan and Silman's Play Winning Chess. Even the condescendingly titled, Chess for Dummies by James Eade, and Chess for Complete Idiots by Patrick Wolff offer far more the AC. Ironically, AC is a much more basic book than the equally poorly titled Simple Chess, by Michael Stean. That book would bewilder a beginner and is more suitable for 1500-1800 players!

Great, simple clear colorful book on chess.,

Only a quarter of an inch thick, this heavy paperback has beautiful color picture board diagrams. Title says Advanced chess, but really for those who know how to move chess pieces. Very good introduction to opening principles, Opening examples; middle game strategies and tactics and endgame ideas. I have a library of more than 100 chess books, this book is outstanding bacause it covers all phases of the game and explains chess ideas clearly. If you looking for a slim chess book with with oustanding diagrams and crystal clear explanations, this is it.

Best Chess Book Yet!,

This review is from: Advanced Chess (Usborne Chess Guides) (Paperback)
OK, I have read a lot of chess books, most of them arcane making you play out chess games till your fingers fall off from moving pieces, leaving you wondering, what was I supposed to learn there. As a low intermediate player this book gets to the essential concepts in a fast creative and easy to grasp format. The color coded chapters include:
Piece control, the opening, Spanish openings, Kings gambit, King's Indian, middle-game, endgame, Rook endgames, Winning drawing and losing, planning, defense, tactical combination, Sacrifices, Where to go from here. Each concept is laid out in colorful creative graphic displays that make absorption easy. I strongly recommend this book to any player who is beginner to middle intermediate in their chess knowledge.
