Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Written as an advanced companion to Ben Forta's ColdFusion 4.0 Web Application Construction Kit, Advanced ColdFusion 4.0 Application Development is a topical guide to the more sophisticated aspects of ColdFusion 4.0.

The book is organized into four independent parts--scalability, security, extending ColdFusion, and advanced application development. Scalability covers the various ways to keep track of your server performance, scale up configurations, and keep track of clients. This first part also covers Cluster Cats--a load-balancing solution bundled with the Enterprise version of ColdFusion 4.

In the security section, the author discusses the User Authentication Framework and security sandboxes and explains how to integrate ColdFusion security with your network operating system. The third part focuses on how to modify and extend the ColdFusion environment to truly make the most of it. It begins with an extensive discussion on custom tags and CFX tags and then covers integration with Delphi, CORBA, Visual Tool Markup Language (VTML), and customization of the development environment.

The final part is a rapid-fire discussion of many key areas: Web Dynamic Data Exchange, code sharing with Visual Basic and Perl, scripting, intelligent agents, and interactions with the System Registry. The book wraps up with useful appendices that provide references for tags, functions, VTML, the Wizard Markup Language (WIZML), and the DTD file format. A companion CD-ROM provides a trial version of ColdFusion to make this definitive work complete. --Stephen W. Plain

From Library Journal

ColdFusion is a very powerful application development environment for database-driven web sites. It is an excellent tool for developing web sites that need to grow. Forta discusses issues of scalability, security, extensibility, scripting, agent design, and distributed databases. This book is written by developers for developers and is not a beginners' introduction to ColdFusion. The CD contains an evaluation copy of ColdFusion for NT and Sun Solaris along with all code in the book as well as other third-party web utilities. For large academic and public libraries.

I think I will have to buy another copy of this one soon. I have really worn it out. If you are an experienced CF programmer, you NEED this book at your workstation at ALL times! If you want to know how to integrate WDDx and XML, Delphi, CORBA, COM, DCOM, VB, ASP, C++ into CF, this is the place to go and the book to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allaire's ColdFusion evangelist?, October 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Advanced Cold Fusion 4 Application Development (Paperback)
JJ Allaire - founder of Allaire Corporation - describes Ben Forta as their ColdFusion evangelist (guru/expert/sage). He certainly deserves the title as this book is proof of his knowledge and expertise with the ColdFusion platform.

If you are serious about ColdFusion development, hey - if you purchased the product you must be - this book is an essential reference. Although the documentation provided with the original software far exceeds what you would normally get from, say, Micro$oft, you still NEED this book.

Its a big book but it is not short on quality information with real life examples. It's the bible for ColdFusion 4.0 and then some.

Thanks to Ben's book I'm earning substantial commissions for my employer for developing CF sites. ColdFusion makes it easy. This book shows you how easy it really can be.

The custom tags provided on the enclosed CD-ROM are very useful (perhaps more for US customers than elsewhere) and add value to an already capital investment. Hide this one from fellow CF developers or you will never see it again!

Ideal for beginners and a very handy reference for expert users also.

5.0 out of 5 stars The intention of the book is as the title says, October 4, 1999

This review is from: Advanced Cold Fusion 4 Application Development (Paperback)
Everyone in the ColdFusion community has always loved Ben Forta's prequel to this book, The ColdFusion Web Application Construction Kit, but until now there has been no source for advanced CF training. All the developers were left to themselves to figure it out. Some people succeeded, while others found it too difficult, there was simply no general authority on what to do, or how to do it right. That has since changed, Ben Forta is litterly the backbone of the CF community and the reason for its success. Now, because of him, developers can simply buy this book after completing the first and have a very good understanding of the advanced features within ColdFusion. Or if you are already a successful CF developer buy this book to to use as a reference, its filled with useful tips and information on so many subjects you'll never put it down. It is always good to keep around for when you get stuck!
