About the Author

Zongjin Li is a Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is the chief scientist in a study of environmentally friendly contemporary concrete, a national key project in China.

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. Since the 1990's concrete technology has been developing rapidly. In response to the urgent need for a book that introduces updated methodology, knowledge and understanding of new developments in concrete technology, Wiley has published Zongjin Li's "Advanced Concrete Technology." In addition to discussion of basic aspects of concrete, this book provides very comprehensive information about concrete technology. A systematic introduction of new developments includes advanced cement-based composites, self compacting concrete, ultra high strength/performance concrete, and extruded building products. An excellent discussion on concrete fracture mechanics and non-destructive evaluation is given in two separate chapters. There is also has a chapter on future developments and trends including aspects of sustainability and service life design.

The book benefits from the author's research expertise as well as extensive involvement in teaching at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. For example, the overview of non-destructive testing (NDT) for concrete engineering is systematic and comprehensive. A complete and clear discussion of newly developed NDT methods includes non-contact resistivity measurement, shear wave reflection, longitudinal wave transmission, and embedded cement-based piezoelectric transducer based ultrasonic measurements. New understanding about stages of cement hydration based on non-contact resistivity measurements and various micro-structural studies provides a scientific and realistic explanation for the complex nature of Portland cement hydration.

Focused in concrete cementitious and innovative admixtures. If you expect to learn about concrete applied in construction processing in heavy engineering is not this book will satisfy.

The title is honest, this is a comprehensive exposition of the engineering study of concrete and concrete products and processes.
The author is Chinese and certain detectible Chinese features creep into the text after the first 10 or so pages, which evidently received a more careful editorial review. Nevertheless the book is generally easy to read and understand, and skipping to particular
sections of interest later in the book can be done easily and with comprehension. I would recommend purchase for anyone involved
in any phase of concrete production.
