I have over 34 years of critical care nursing experience including the roles of staff nurses, clinical nurse specialist, and nurse faculty. For many years, I have wanted a critical care nursing textbook that contained more advanced content for myself and to recommend for my graduate nursing students. The content of this textbook is more advanced than any other available critical care nursing textbook. In addition, the formatting of this textbook is very well done. There are many figures, flow charts and diagnostic algorithms to explain anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical and nursing care (plans of care). The authors were able to successfully apply anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to critical care clinical situations and patients. In addition, there are chapters in this book dedicated to global issues in critical care such as thermoregulation, symptom management, families in critical care, glycemic control, blood conservation and replacement, caring for immediate post-operative patients, critically ill pediatric, pregnant, elderly, and neuropsychiatric patient, bariatric patient, chemical dependent, and end-of-life care. The drug information is also geared toward nurses and not pharmacists. Lastly, but not least, the inclusion of evidence based-practice is noted in every chapter of the book that references medical and nursing care and practice. If you want a book on advanced critical care nursing that is up-to-date and a great reference than this is the book for you. I would highly recommend it.

I have been out of ICU nursing for the past 1 1/2 years and this book is great at getting me up to speed. It's current and explains everything very well.

Books are very expensive and if I could only buy one this would be it. It is very comphrensive and has all the info needed while working in an ICU.
