A whole new way to learn spanish!, July 6, 2003
This review is from: Advanced DVD Spanish (DVD)
This program takes spanish language learning software to a whole new level. Advanced spanish is an appropriate title for this program since It literally immerses you in the language with an actual spanish soap opera episode. You can practice in a number of ways, as well as take quizzes. Some of the activities include a visually based vocabulary program. In this area of the software the program shows you a still from the movie with an object circled and you name the word in spanish. Others include listening for the missing word in a conversation- harder than it sounds. You can watch the movie with and without spanish subtitles so you can follow along with the script or try to watch it without. Some minor- very minor- technical glitches not really affecting the operation of the program or use of it prevent me from giving this a full 5 stars. But a really great, well rounded buy!

Damaging reviews, or reviews with an agenda, October 1, 2006
This review is from: Advanced DVD Spanish (DVD)
There are so many absolutely useless foreign language products (many of which I've purchased) on the market it upsets me when someone writes a review on a product criticizing it for some performance aspect it was never designed to include. This product, which is great for developing vocabulary and attuning one's ear to a number of different Spanish-speaking voices, is clearly labeled as a product for Windows and Macintosh based computers. If someone, unable to comprehend that, decides to give it a try and see if it will run on their Palm product, that is the risk they are taking for themselves. Notice that there are, before this, only two reviews -- one very positive, and one negative. The negative is based on the perception that this program will run on a Palm Pilot, something it was not created for and does not claim to do. How fair is that to the company or the product? How many people have bypassed this product because they only look a the combined star rating?
Be careful when you read reviews. It's obvious that there are four types of reviews on Amazon: 1) Companies trying to push their own products, 2) Competitors trying to tear down a competing product, 3) People who have no idea what the product was created to do and criticize it because it won't fulfull some need it wasn't designed for, and 4) those who honestly try and share their enthusiam for a product that has been truly helpful.
Before purchasing: Read between the lines and don't assume anything, if you're looking for specific functionality.
