Disappointing--and dangerous,
By
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
A few good things, but because of being published before R5 shipped, most of the Java stuff is wrong and will not work with the shipping R5. Her articles tend to be better than her books.

Some good techniques...,
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
This book does have a number of good web techniques for those who are new to Domino - stuff often found in good technical articles. Good for the beginner to intermediate in Domino web programming. Not so useful for the developer who has done abit of work with Domino web stuff before. Just to echo other reviewers, the Domino R5 version used was beta and some things are outdated.

Don't waste your're money if you want info beyond Notes 4.6,

Don't waste your're money if you want info beyond Notes 4.6. The Notes 5.0 early beta used in this book briefly, is just that. The info is really irrelevant to the gold 5.0 release. Change the title of the book, they should not promise Notes 5.0 info because it just does not measure up.

Don't be misled by those who say this is a 4.6 book,
By Luis C Contreras (Laguna Niguel, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
I listened to those reviews and delayed buying this book--causing me to lose a LOT of programming time. Yes, the book seems like it was written from a 4.6 point of view, but the fundamental concepts and examples still work for R5. Plus, let's face it, some of the R5 features don't work exactly as they should, so it's good to know how to resort to 4.6 techniques. This book has some really good EXAMPLES--not to be confused with the many Domino books that were clearly lifted from the Help documentation and that do NOT help programmers--at least that's what I've found from other books.

Useable Reference and well written book,
By Ladislav Andel (West Palm Beach, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
I found this book a helpful reference to Notes WEB development in general. Several references to previous releases are given, which is good for in depth understanding. Even when R5's new features help to make things sometimes a lot easier, some "manual work" is still required in order to produce high-quality WEB and Ecommerce sites. Some of the new features are not included, but I guess that is because the information was not (reliably) available at the time of writing. Keep up good work !

If you are developing Domino (web browser) applications with R5 then this is a great book.
If you've moved on to R6 or R6.5 then go with "Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible" by Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver.

Poor examples & Incomplete explanations,
By Hank "hwonders" (Butler, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
If you are looking for a book that gives you an overview of Domino's web capabilities then this book is for you. But if your like me, looking for a book that provides real world solutions and thorough explanations of code examples that can be modified and reused, this book has very limited use. I found far better code examples / explanations for free on the Web.

It tells you it can be done, then drops you like a hot potat,

This book is no better than some of the annoying posts I see on the notes.net discussion. This book tells you something can be done. It tells you what you could do in very general terms. Then it refers you to other resources. So why should I bother to buy this book? I specifically was looking for info on the ViewApplet, and Javascript control of applets. The information that is available in Lotus' documentation was repeated. In addition, once that information was presented, the author gave the usual 'go look elsewhere' for real examples - what good is that! I have questions that are advanced in nature--but none of them are answered in this book. So why should I bother buying this book? The references to other sites, and other books is insulting and stupid when you consider you are buying the book in the first place to find that information - IN THIS BOOK. For the few items that this book does actually discuss, the knowledge imparted is shallow, and no better than what you can find in the documentation. I am very disastisfied with the entire Notes/Domino yellow book series from McGraw Hill. I own many of them which I bought from Amazon based on reviews. I am sorry I did. All these books are very shallow and general. You might get lucky and get one or two pages of information you could not find anywhere else. However the rest of the material in this series of books is review or just "I know it, you can do it, find out how elsewhere". If you are a longtime Domino developer, than this book is not for you. You already know what's in it.

Very, Very, Very, Very Weak as a Domino 5 Book,
By Stewart Robertson (stickleback@ibm.net) (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
To judge this book you need to consider that it is suppose to be focused on, Domino 5 Web Development. I'm afraid that as a Domino 5 book it is close to pathetic. A more appropriate title may have been "Advanced Domino 4.6 Web Programming: I also tinkered with the Domino 5 Beta 1 for a couple of days". The coverage of the new features in R5 is limited, missing basic new features like entering javascipt into the code editor for a button or hotspot. All the examples that are given enter Javascript into the form as Pass Thru HTML, which is a 4.6 old hat.If you look at this book as a Domino 4.6 guide, there are some cool examples and ideas but as a Domino 5 book it is a rip off. I really feel quite cheated. Steer clear of this one, save your $40 until someone comes out with a REAL Domino 5 book.

R5 has not even been released,
By A Customer
This review is from: Advanced Domino 5 Web Programming (Lotus Notes/Domino Series) (Paperback)
This book should be titled Advanced Domino 4.6 Web Programming and a future look into R5. Don't waste your money unless you need a good 4.6 book. It does not always pay to have your book out first.
