This book is older now, so not all of the technology is necessarily up to date. However, the section on engine balance is excellent, and I actually purchased this book specifically for that reason. It goes into better detail about several crankshaft configurations and how they are balanced, better than many other books on the subject.

This book has a lot of engine type descriptions as well as engine component descriptions that will be very useful for the student or the engine enthusiast trying ot advance his/her knowledge. Many different types of engines are described from many different manufacturers, lots of them european. This book is good for learning about engine and engine operation but is not detailed enough for engine design (it is not heavy on the math). there are a lot of rules of thumb for engine component modifications (such as manifold design) which may be useful for someone enhancing a performance engine but for the engine tuner, there is very little information that applies (electronic spark advance theories for example are sorely lacking while too many pages are used to describe electronic components theory of operation). this book is the best and most modern tutorial available today however.

For the beginner of Engine Design & Testing, it will be very helpful guide.
