5.0 out of 5 stars Best reference to have on your desk.
This is a NOT a text book for learning engineering mathematics. Its just way too dry. However, it is the single best reference to have next to you while you are working as a scientist, engineer or (as I have found recently) economist. After you leave University, you aren't going to remember all the various expansions, techniques and log rules. Once you are working, you...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent reference book, mediocre text book
GOOD:
This book is useful if you need a fairly comprehensive reference book covering many mathematical topics in engineering.

BAD:
Most topics are treated too superficially to be useful as a primary learning text.

STRANGE TARGET GROUP:
If you could only have one math book after you've gone through all your undergraduate engineering...

4.0 out of 5 stars A book with deep insight in Math for UG students..., April 30, 2006
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Hardcover)
The first time I came across this book was when I was appointed Teaching Assistant for a course called "Biomathematics" at IIT. At first, I was bit scared looking at the size of this book. As days progressed, I realized the very deep insight it gives for the UG engg students. The practical illustrations complementing the concepts are the highlights of this book.

The 4 star rating is because this book starts with very advanced topics and is not much suitable for self-study. Otherwise, it is a great Math book to have. Highly recommended for any UG/PG student who wants to learn the intricacies of engineering mathematics.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding work for engineers, January 23, 2007

This is one of the premiere works in engineering mathematics. Not designed to be a formal text in mathematics, the target audience is the engineering student, as the title implies. The text is very well written and there are a variety of additional solution manuals available. This is a very highly recommended text for the engineering student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kreyszig will live forever in our hearts, August 12, 2010
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Hardcover)
It's really sad to know that Professor Kreyszig died unexpectedly on December 12, 2008 during a trip to Europe. Nevertheless, his scientific legacy will remain with us forever. Besides its target audience (i.e., traditional engineers), also I strongly recommend this book to any wannabe financial economist or quant, due to the pedagogical treatment of this book about tons of math concepts and techniques that are bread-and-butter in modern finance (linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, Fourier Transforms, complex analysis, and so forth). The mastery of the material covered in this book is a prerequisite to start the study of stochastic differential equations and other advanced concepts in financial mathematics that are not included in this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent reference book, mediocre text book, March 27, 2008
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Hardcover)
GOOD:

This book is useful if you need a fairly comprehensive reference book covering many mathematical topics in engineering.

BAD:

Most topics are treated too superficially to be useful as a primary learning text.

STRANGE TARGET GROUP:

If you could only have one math book after you've gone through all your undergraduate engineering courses, this might be a good pick. But that's a silly scenario. Instead, you'll probably be better off with four or five separate books that are focused on their subject.

I don't regret purchasing this text, but I got it very cheap overseas... It's really not worth the current $132 price, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars My overall impression is this: it's a great book, December 11, 2007

It's exactly what most 4 and 5 star reviews say it is. The only real issue I have that no other review (not even a 1, 2, or 3 star review) mentions is this. The book doesn't provide notes for conceptual pitfalls that can and will arise when reading it. A good example is the word "vector." There are actually 2 types of vectors mentioned: one from the linear algebra camp, the other from the vector calculus school of thought. These two types of vectors are actually quite different. A vector calculus vector almost always refers back to a 2 or 3 dimensional description of the motion or transmission of mass, energy, waves, and particles in a vertical/horizontal plane or in three-dimensional space; whereas a linear algebra vector more-often-than-not represents an arbitrary set of ordered numbers in a 1XN or NX1 matrix that is simply meaningless as a physical vector.

Very difficult problems, and somewhat difficult to follow at times, but what can you expect from mathematics of this level? Overall, the book was decent, but that could have done more to make it easier to read and use, like including practical examples, which the book lacks almost entirely.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text, October 29, 2009
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Hardcover)
This really is an excellent text that covers all of engineering mathematics and much, much more. It is a superb reference that will in come useful again and again for anyone working at the analytical end of engineering related fields. It is also entirely appropriate for learning material for the first time. There are very many relevant examples and problems to work through and each concept is carefully discussed and placed in context.

Surprisingly, there are number of highly critical reviews about it and I can only conclude these are from people who did not understand what they were buying. The "Advanced" is in the title for a reason. You are expected to have a good knowledge of maths and this should include all basic calculus, so buy it for what it is - an advanced text. Do not expect a coverage of fundamental topics, there are many other good books which cover these.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very general, November 1, 2011
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Hardcover)
This book has little explanation of the covered math, also it is very very general with little examples, so using it to solve any problems is very hard.

If you are a math genius, maybe you can undestand it. But the only thing it does is listing the formulas, but actually not every one you need.

I would rather recommend Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Michael Greenberg. Its old but its better.
