Book Description

1584883499 978-1584883494 March 28, 2003 2
Resoundingly popular in its first edition, Dean Duffy's Advanced Engineering Mathematics has been updated, expanded, and now more than ever provides the solid mathematics background required throughout the engineering disciplines. Melding the author's expertise as a practitioner and his years of teaching engineering mathematics, this text stands clearly apart from the many others available.

Relevant, insightful examples follow nearly every concept introduced and demonstrate its practical application. This edition includes two new chapters on differential equations, another on Hilbert transforms, and many new examples, problems, and projects that help build problem-solving skills. Most importantly, the book now incorporates the use of MATLAB throughout the presentation to reinforce the concepts presented. MATLAB code is included so readers can take an analytic result, fully explore it graphically, and gain valuable experience with this industry-standard software.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This third edition includes new examples, problems, projects, and, more significantly, new and improved coverage of Green’s functions and matrix exponential, numerical methods for solving differential equations, and probability and random processes. … The text accommodates two general tracks: the differential equations course, and the engineering mathematics course. Duffy’s career included 25 years with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center (until 2005), and he taught for many years at the US Naval Academy and the US Military Academy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Less practice, August 5, 2003
By
Jörg Rieck (Zürich,Switzerland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB, Second Edition (Hardcover)
You can learn a lot of mathematics in this book but nothing about MATLAB. There is no good practice in this book.
A hint for the author. Try to make a CD-ROM with all examples on it. So everyone can get familiar with MATLAB and the surface. Best would be to double or triple the number of examples. (good examples in MATLAB Code)
Rethink it and I will be the first who buys the improved edition of this book otherwise you only have to change the title in :Advanced Engineering Mathematics pictures by MATLAB.
Thanks for reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well organized approach, March 24, 2000
By A Customer
The book organizes several complex topics in a very intuitive and logical manner, which makes it a good reference book for engineering students. A detailed section on statistics would have been helpful.
