Book Description

Through four editions, Peter O'Neil has made rigorous engineering mathematics topics accessible to thousands of students by emphasizing visuals, numerous examples, and interesting mathematical models. ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS features a greater number of examples and problems and is fine-tuned throughout to improve the clear flow of ideas. The computer plays a more prominent role than ever in generating computer graphics used to display concepts. And problem sets incorporate the use of such leading software packages as MAPLE. Computational assistance, exercises and projects have been included to encourage students to make use of these computational tools. The content is organized into eight-parts and covers a wide spectrum of topics including Ordinary Differential Equations, Vectors and Linear Algebra, Systems of Differential Equations, Vector Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Orthogonal Expansions, and Wavelets, Special Functions, Partial Differential Equations, Complex Analysis, and Historical Notes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I found the diagrams and graphs to be particularly good for a book of this nature. I feel that the strength of the book is its breadth and clear organization. It is an excellent reference also."

"There are more than enough problems. This is the best part of the book." "The independence of the various chapters is a great strength of the book."

"The ordinary differential equations/Laplace/systems material is very well-written and the students are very happy with it."

3.0 out of 5 stars Advanced Engineering Mathematics, May 24, 2000
By
Random Symmetry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) - See all my reviews
As a text to learn mathematics, this text is better than average. However, there are numerous errors in terms of handling real physical systems. The author clearly does not understand the words "dimensional analysis" when he describes "real problems". Futhermore, many times the author seems quite willing to change physical laws in order to simplify the mathematics. For any doubters out there, consider the 1/r (not 1/r2) electrostatic force described on page 246 problem 19. Simply stated this text is above average if you plan on learning the mathematics needed to solve engineering/physics problems. However, under no circumstances should this text be used to obtain equations for real systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm totally satisfied with this book. The price is right., September 19, 1999

This book should be a "must" for every graduate student in engineering, mathematics, and applied science. It is well-written and is very comprehensive. In fact, one just needs to read this book and teach other people. As long as you actually spend your time reading this book, you don't even need to come to class and you still score well on your exams. I myself have learned a great deal from this book.
