5.0 out of 5 stars A good Grammar in Use Book, March 1, 2011
This review is from: Advanced Grammar (Longman Learners Grammar) (Paperback)
I am a bit surprised I don't see a review on this book. This grammar book got me through the Michigan CPE (Proficiency) exams. And, believe me, I had little time to prepare too.

This is a Grammar-in-Use Book designed, as it states, for self study (my kind of books!!!!). This is what the book delivers marvelously.

A few words on the structure of the book since there is no preview at the time of my writing the review.

The book is divided in two parts, the first being the diagnostic tests. Each diagnostic test corresponds to a Chapter of the remaining book and covers a topic (e.g. tenses, indirect speech etc.). The test is essentially a group of exercises related to that topic. There are answers for the diagnostic tests at the end of the book and for each exercise the authors refer the reader to the specific paragraph were the relevant topic is covered. This helps identify weaknesses and is valuable in case someone wants to focus first on his/her weaknesses and then proceed to more familiar subjects. Moreover, one does not have to spend time searching throughout the book to find which rule has been violated.

The second part is the core of the book and contains 30 something chapters if I recall correctly (I lost my copy of the book and I am seriously thinking to rebuy it, if my search for it proves fruitless). The topics are quite extensive and in each chapter/unit there are plenty of exercises with the answers at the end of the book.

I highly recommend it.
