Editorial Reviews

Review

This book can help mathematics educators place their research within a broader perspective of the development of mathematical reasoning, and it can help mathematicians see the deep connections between mathematics education research and their own teaching. (Patrick W. Thompson in Journal for Research in Mathematics Education) It promises to be the standard reference work for many years to come, and a source of both information and inspiration ... The book is a most welcome distillation and resource for further development in our collective sense of what constitutes advanced mathematical thinking, and how we can make it accessible to more people. (John Mason in Zentralblatt für Didaktik der Mathematik)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read for both the educator and the student., April 9, 2010

Very interesting book on the thought processes and psychology of mathematicians and mathematics students, and their relevance to mathematics pedagogy.

It seems as if the book was primarily written with teachers of mathematics in mind, and it will surely be of benefit to many of them. However, I would also strongly recommend the book to students of mathematics, who will benefit from a deeper understanding of the types of mental qualities they should try to develop to be successful mathematicians. It will also give students a better understanding of the *purpose* of all of these abstract definitions -- that is, what are these books/teachers trying to instill in them? Either way, this was a very enlightening and pleasurable read. A++.
