James A. Crawford is a consultant for AM1, LLC, based in San Diego, California. At AM1, he has performed technology development and technical management of communications systems and products for commercial and consumer applications. The author of Frequency Synthesizer Design Handbook (Artech House, 1994), he holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California.

More About the Author

James A. Crawford (1954- ) was born in Iowa and moved to southern California for graduate school on a Hughes Aircraft fellowship right after college. Although he studied quantum electronics while at USC, he became the head of the frequency sources group at Hughes Ground Systems Group where much of the activity was centered on phase-locked systems. He has previously been a member of the technical staff at multiple aerospace firms like Hughes, TRW, and Linkabit. Since the 1990s, he has primarily been a consultant to industry, but has also been directly involved with several start-up companies. Fundamentally having a math/physics bent, his present-day interests also include detailed design and fabrication of precision telescope optical systems and observational astrodynamics. He is also an avid photographer. He and his wife have 4 children and are partial to golden retrievers. Visit his website at

True to its title, this is not an introductory text, but it contains an amazing amount of information on PLLs of various kinds (including fractional-n synthesizers with sigma-delta modulators) and on their applications in systems. The material is well organized and reads smoothly in spite of the inclusion of substantial mathematical developments. The author provides mathematical background with apparent ease and rigor but also offers practical recommendations and a large collection of useful formulas and graphs. The work is well illustrated and most graphs are referenced to the MATLAB® scripts (included on CD) that produced them. The availability of the scripts and extensive references facilitate further pursuit of the material covered. The author has taken the care to provide an errata, and also as a complete table of contents, on his web site, which I found by searching for his name with the book title. This is an excellent reference for engineers who work with phase-locked loops.
