Book Description

June 2005 1412058740 978-1412058742
This textbook is unique.

It provides all the required material for successful completion of AP Calculus AB even for a student working alone. Simple explanations of complex ideas are followed by a variety of worked examples. Each chapter contains many worksheets offering a very wide selection of problems; multiple-choice, calculator, non-calculator, practical, theoretical, graphical. Answers appear directly after each worksheet. There are far more problems than would normally be assigned and hence the textbook is quite enough on its own. Many of the problems are original accumulated over decades from actual classroom settings. The excellent exam results of our students, while using this book, are a testament to its value.

Roger Allen and Jack Koenka

More About the Author

I have taught high school mathematics at Upper Canada College and Havergal College in Toronto, where I was head of the mathematics department. I had the privilege of working with my co-author, Roger Allen, at each of these schools. Roger was head of math prior to me at UCC. We worked together over the years on producing materials that students found easy to read and interesting. In all of our work, we sought to present problems, many of which we created, which challenged students to think and to use many ideas. Traditional textbooks seem to present repeated versions of the same problem. Most of our books initially were used only by our own students. In 2005, Roger and I published the Advanced Placement Calculus Textbook. This book had been field-tested successfully for two years, so there were not nearly the same number of errors as in many texts. For the past 15 years I have also been involved in the creation of problems for the Canadian Mathematics Competitions. In 2004, I was recognized with a life-time teaching award, called the Descartes Medal.
Since July, 2008, I have worked as a mathematics consultant at Ryerson University in Toronto. There, I have been asked to research and implement programs to ease the transition from high school to university mathematics. I miss teaching high school and enjoy the opportunities I get when asked to do so.
