Review

As part of a new series for upper level classroom instruction, Advanced Placement Classroom: Romeo and Juliet is a teaching guide for presenting Shakespeare's classic play in an engaging, innovative format. Author R. Brigham Lampert has created more than 50 supplemental activities for Romeo and Juliet, including debates, journal writing prompts and critical thinking tasks, in order to encourage higher level analysis by the students. Also included are multiple interpretations of the play and photos of Renaissance-era constructions used to develop the students' understanding of the time period when this story took place. Each activity is based on Advanced Placement and college-level standards for learning. This guide will encourage creative and critical thinking as well as in-depth investigation of one of the most well-known plays in history. --Gifted Child Today, Vol. 32, No. 1, Winter 2009

This review is from: Advanced Placement Classroom: Romeo and Juliet (Teaching Success Guide for the Advanced Placement Classroom) (Paperback)
This Prufrock Press guide for Romeo and Juliet was developed for use in the Advanced Placement classroom, but may be helpful for any advanced student of Shakespeare. It has a helpful table which shows how the book aligns with standards of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The author discusses themes and motifs of note, shares impressions of Verona, and reviews Shakespeare's early history. A very interesting section of the guide contains a taxonomical worksheet for each act of the play. It has prompts for the students which challenge, "To get an A on this assignment, you must answer this question, plus all of the ones below it." Those who are happy to get just a passing grade, or a B, may chose to do less, while more ambitious students may decide to complete every option. The book also has a nice section devoted to essays, with sample questions and essay prompts for a 25 minutes SAT style essay as well as the longer AP essay.
