Book Description

January 8, 2002
A perennial bestseller after nearly two decades, SEX TIPS FOR GIRLS raised the bar for cultural humorist-critics. Now Cynthia Heimel weighs in with a sequel full of observations wry, sassy, raunchy and wise. Giving the proverbial book of love a much needed rewrite, ADVANCED SEX TIPS FOR GIRLS finds Cynthia Heimel in peak form, doling out deadpan sass and wry wit in equal measure, and revealing much more about her personal life than ever before. Whether she's tackling the vital issues of our times with trademark acuity (what's so funny about a guy in a dress? what are boundary issues?); crafting a reverent hymn to the canine set ('My angel, Homer'); or looking back with hard won perspective on the last half century (The 1960s, Still a Problem for the Chicks?') Heimel more than lives up to her reputation as today's answer to Dorothy Parker. The essays in ADVANCED SEX TIPS FOR GIRLS offer founts of brilliant barbs, refreshing candor, and generation spanning humour.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this sequel to Sex Tips for Girls, Heimel offers her sardonic advice and wry observations on the difficulties of being a woman during the past 40 years. Thirty-two short chapters cover topics as varied as men's preference for bitchy women, Heimel's delight in discovering feminism, eating out of frustration, and trying testosterone patches. Several chapters deal with her close connection with her many dogs, including the "beagle-ish" Homer, who had "no pedigree at all, just essence of K-9, which, if you ask me, is at least next to godliness." Heimel has a knack for choosing snappy cover titles and for poking fun at male behavior, and here she reveals much of her personal life. Some readers will find her sex tips hilarious and sassy. Others will consider them frivolous, vulgar, and full of anger. A suitable purchase for larger public libraries. Ilse Heidmann, Olympia, WA

Anne Lamott Author of Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith Cynthia Heimel is the funniest, most wonderful writer on romance, and sex and bodies. Sometimes she makes me laugh out loud and sometimes she makes me feel like crying. This book is even better than Sex Tips for Girls. I'm going to tell people I wrote it. -- Review

Cynthia Heimel has done it again. I have been a fan ever since the original Sex Tips For Girls, and she just keeps getting better.

While this book is every bit as funny as her earlier books (maybe funnier), it also has an element of soulfulness beyond what we've seen from her before, which makes it even more wonderful than I was expecting.

Highly recommended!

Cynthia Heimel makes me snicker knowingly right out loud in public. She's wise, witty, pointed, and pulls no punches. Oh, and did I mention that she's funny? Especially her alter ego, Problem Lady?

I recognized people I know on almost every page of this book. I may force my boyfriend to read it. If it doesn't terrify him, it will almost definitely give us lots to talk about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and then something else, too!, February 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Advanced Sex Tips for Girls: This Time It's Personal (Hardcover)
Cynthia Heimel's latest is long overdue: it's sort of a sequel to her 1983 Sex Tips for Girls and sort of a sequel to her other books -- part of the ongoing series of observations and gags and wisdom and wit and goofiness that is her body of work. In this new book she's as hysterical as ever, but some of the humor is heightened (or deepened) by more genuine pain than her earlier stuff. Somehow she manages to get through the most difficult moments -- the implosion of a marriage, the death of a wonderful dog -- with her voice intact, and her head battered but unbowed.

Problem Lady -- always a high point -- returns.
