Book Description

January 13, 1997

This collection of challenging drills is a great resource for teaching advanced skills and for developing smart team players. You'll find 69 drills to help players:

- develop the ability and confidence to handle the ball under pressure,
- improve the way they see the field and make decisions,
- master advanced skills that they can use in specific game situations, and
- apply their skills successfully within a team framework.

The drills are organized according to specific objectives, with a drill finder to help you select the drills that work on the areas you want to improve. Each drill is presented in a two-page format that includes instructions about the drill's organization and procedure, key points for learning it, a large, clear diagram, and suggested variations for adjusting the difficulty level of the drill. Coaches will especially appreciate the chapter on using drills to construct practice sessions, as well as the 1-vs.-1 player-evaluation model, which you can use as a tool for selecting team members or as a practice exercise.

The drills in this book are more challenging and more fun than the basics and are particularly valuable for select youth league, high school, and college-level players. Players under the age of 12 who have a solid grasp of the fundamentals will also benefit from some of these drills.

Better practice means better performance. Advanced Soccer Drills is the perfect tool for developing complete players with high-level skills and soccer savvy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for collage and high school coaches, June 10, 1999

This review is from: Advanced Soccer Drills: 69 Drills for Techniques and Tactics (Paperback)
The entire book is filled with all kinds of drills (most of them are very creative but there are some that are imposable to acheive or exsecute; there are few drills that I would not recommend to a coach). If you're not a coach this book is NOT for you!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Another pattern book of soccer drills., November 5, 1997

This review is from: Advanced Soccer Drills: 69 Drills for Techniques and Tactics (Paperback)

This book is similar in concept to the book "Dutch Soccer Drills Vol.I" by Richard Kentwell, which I also reviewed. The fundamental comments and criticisms that I made in that review about training for soccer by running such rigid patterns apply to this book as well. This book also does not have hardly anything in the way of tips on basic techniques for ball control.

There are several reasons why I give this book a slightly higher rating: First, the diagrams of the drills are more simply laid out and are easier to understand - and so if your soccer training philosophy actually includes running such rigid pattern drills, this book might actually be a useful guide for such training. Second, many of the diagrams simply describe how to lay out a simple "skill" type of drill to practice a particular type of skill, rather than running a complex pattern drill. Third, the book has some interesting comments about how the ODP (Olympic Development Program) selection process is run (at least by Schmidt et al in his region). Fourth, the commentary accompanying each drill is better written and tells you what each drill is actually supposed to teach.
