4.0 out of 5 stars Surgery Resident Review
This book is designed for surgical residents. Medical students should do well with a student oriented text and the little Surgical Recall.

Residents on the other hand will find this to be a useful review especially before the ABSITE.

The book is too long for any M3 to try to go through on their surgery rotation. I would suggest NMS Casefiles for surgery instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is what your memory needs!, May 26, 2000
This is one of the best investment in medical books that I have made. I am in 3rd year now and have accumulated heaps of COMPREHENSIVE books that I have only ever just flipped through. Since buying "Advanced Surgical Recall", I have used it every single time a topic pops up in my surgical term. It includes topics on General Surgery as well as Surgical Specialties, plus other useful background information. There is also some anatomy, with occasional drawings to emphasize. Admittedly, some of the questions are too advanced for me at this stage (I also love my "Surgical Recall" but that's another story, by the way the 2 books are complementary and in no way exclude the usefulness of the other), but the majority are just what I need! I anticipate I will find it completely relevant for my 4th year exam next year. The 2 column format with questions on the left and answers on the right is ideal for testing those neurons...and the bookmark that comes with the book is absolutely indispensable. Basically it emphasizes what you would need to know and not more. The only thing is...I wish there is a version with metric units, any references to fluid and electrolyte measurements are totally meaningless to me here is Australia. I will write them in I think. Of course you will still need a proper surgical text, admittedly I have written in a few additional points in the book that I thought were important from reading other texts. But I had my surgical exam just today and the use of this book in revision was just invaluable. Not to mention those times when you do not feel like even glancing at your big surgery text, or when you have about 10 minutes spare while waiting in the car or for the pasta to cook....just attempting a few questions will make you feel constructive! This book has started a craze in me to check out all the other books in the "Recall" series...oh dear looks like an expensive year for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, August 25, 2009
I was looking for a book that summarizes all the most important facts about surgery. The first time I saw this book was during my observership rotation.I remembered when a surgery resident showed me this book and the advantages of having it. I realized it was the most appropriate moment to buy it. It served me a lot during my rotation, I responded quickly and with confidence to all the questions from the attendings. It just not also shows the basic but the complex surgical questions and clinical scenarios the residents face everyday. I highly recommend this book for any student or resident who wants to improve their surgical knowledge and diagnosis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caveat for med students, June 15, 2009
As a fresh 3rd year med student starting his first rotation, which happened to be surgery, I quickly realized this book is leaps and bounds ahead of what we need to know. Unfortunately, the comments on the back of the book make it seem suitable for medical students but this book is clearly for surgical interns/residents.

5.0 out of 5 stars complements "recall", February 23, 2011

third year medical students should definitely start out with the basic surgical recall. once you feel comfortable with the info in that book, move on up to this one. i started using it during my sub I's. it doesn't feel like there is a lot of information repeated in advanced recall, so the two titles complement each other well.

recommended for those seriously considering surgery

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to have in addition with "Surgery Recall.", September 5, 2010

Plenty of extra information. NOT a replacement for the first book. This one just has lots of specific Q and A with plenty of probabilities.

If you got the classic surgical Recall, you will definitively love this advanced surgical recall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info, quick, August 3, 2009
Solid info in nice little quantums. A good supplement to a textbook for internship, helpful on rounds, would not recommend for ABSITE study however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best for surgical pimping, November 11, 2010
This and the elusive pestana review questions are all you need for the shelf. If I'm not mistaken, I believe this still comes with online access to the audio. If you're going into surgery, you probably need something else, but good to do well on a rotation.
