5.0 out of 5 stars The only book of it's kind!
This book is just like the preview shows, for it's 150 pages or so. All full color, step by step photography and description of 10 different artists techniques start to finish. All tutorials show use of the modern tattoo machinery. This is what I've always wished the tattoo mags would be like but never were. Despite the reviews by others here on Amazon, NO Tat mag I've...

This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
The title of this book is completely misleading. Your money would be better spent with a subscription to "Tattoo" or "Flash" magazine. There is no how-to information, and the various write ups on the tattoos are highly repetative (two of the pictures even have the same caption). On top of everything it is poorly written, and the author clearly knows little about the art of tattooing. It reads as though it was written by a 13 year old boy who worships his local tattooist. The book is now being used to level an old coffee table I have.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's NO SECRET, January 23, 2007
By
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
This book is a joke...There are NO Secrets to be learned here. It is written by someone who knows nothing about Tattooing and even less about telling you how to do anything. All it is is a bunch of in series photos of tattooing with a small explanation (nothing informative)with each photo, and you learn nothing from it at all. My Opinion...A TOTAL WASTE OF PAPER! Tells nothing about what you need to know to be able to do the same kind of work, which, by the way was about 75% garbage work and maybe 25% talent. Overall I wouldn't waste your money on this one! If I could give it minus stars for a rating I would.

1.0 out of 5 stars A scratcher's paradise, April 10, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
I personally cannot believe that a few of the artists in this book gave their o.k. to the author of this book. Most of the tattooers have no business trying to teach anything. I believe that if I were going to do this type of book, I'd take a little more time to get with better artists doing cooler tattoos. Even the Capo piece is lacking....it looks like he gave up on the clothes after spending too much time on the face. All in all, if you are a basement tattooer with no prior knowledge, you'll probably learn enough to really scar someone....if you're a professional tattooer with $17 to buy the book, then you probably already tattoo at least as well as anyone in the book. Its worth a read just for a laugh!

1.0 out of 5 stars should be pulled from the shelf, March 21, 2007
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
This book is a joke, with absolutely no insight or information that couldn't be learned from a magazine. Waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS WASTE OF TREES, July 5, 2007
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
First of all I chose one star because there is no option for 0 or even negative stars... This so-called-book is the biggest lie of any book I have ever read. The saying "never judge a book by its cover" is dead on with this one - in a very negative sense. Advanced Tattoo Art - How-to Secrets from the Masters... A few of the pictures of the tattoos are of more-or-less advanced tattoos; however, there are NO secrets in this book and they are definately no words from the mouths of any of the artists that were observed in the so-called-book. A few pages in I knew this book was a waste of money... "Having learned about eight tattoos ago not to ask questions of why something was being done, it was amazing to see Larry work his magic using only shades of black." - Direct quote p.15... "With this tattoo being the first I had ever experienced in-process, the level of art made my head hurt." - Direct quote p.30... WOW - not only is this author a complete lier when it comes to what he says the book encompases, but he had never even watched a tattoo being done before he set out to waste trees and attempt to make money doing so. And this last quote I leave you with is exactly the tone of the entire waste of trees that someone has mistakenly called a book... "Part of the technique used in applying tattoos is selecting the proper voltage from the power supply. The level of power needs to be adjusted to meet with the section of skin in question, as well as the customer's own special conditions. Thinner areas of flesh require lower voltage than thicker segments, and so on. TO KNOW THIS AND BE ABLE TO PROPERLY APPLY THE CORRESPONDING NUMBERS IS ALL PART OF THE CRAFT." - Direct quote p.34... And where that quote ends is at the end of a paragraph - and the next paragraph starts to talk about how only the artists in the "black art" know how to apply the right amount of pressure. I truly despise this so-called-book and wish I would have taken the time to read the reviews that say the same exact thing I am saying... DO NOT BUY THIS WASTE OF TREES...

No real technical info is given here. Your better off purchasing the three tattoo mags you could have bought instead of this. Nice sequential pictures though.

1.0 out of 5 stars wow....this book bites, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
I've been tattooing for a bit now, and this book is horrible. Do not expect to learn anything from the text, as the pieces are from a collectors point of view. Do NOT get me wrong, the ARTISTS are wonderful, and the close up pictures give you some clues and hints, but overall, this is just eye candy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite the let down, May 20, 2007
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
This book is nothing more than a non-tattoo artist's perspective on tattooing. You can get more tips and how-to's just by watching yourself get tattooed. "Step by Step secrets", not even close. If you want to learn the "secrets" of tattooing, get an apprenticeship from a worthy teacher or check out some seminars. Yeah, there are some books out there that will go over machine set-up, needles, cleanliness, etc...this book is definitely NOT one of them. I have a high amount of respect for some of the artists in this book...its just too bad they have very little to do with or say in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book of it's kind!, November 30, 2008
This review is from: Advanced Tattoo Art (How-To Secrets from the Masters) (Paperback)
This book is just like the preview shows, for it's 150 pages or so. All full color, step by step photography and description of 10 different artists techniques start to finish. All tutorials show use of the modern tattoo machinery. This is what I've always wished the tattoo mags would be like but never were. Despite the reviews by others here on Amazon, NO Tat mag I've ever seen covers all this sequentially start to finish. The dozen or so mags at the newsstand are just pics of finished Tats, flash art or conventions with the occasional in progress shot. To me, the finished product is only one aspect, the last aspect. The creation and act of "doing" is the fun part to me which is why I love art technique books. Not sure what these bad reviews are all about, seems they're taking offense to the title or that their fave Tat artists aren't in here. I don't care about title-hype (which is always misleading) or which artists are or are not showcased, I do like most of the pieces done in the tutorials though. I really only wanna see the down and dirty work in progress / techniques used to achieve the finished work which this book does show. If you're genuinely interested in the "How To" aspects of machine tattooing because you've never done it before you'll probably like this book a lot. If you're already a working tattoo artist, then surely there's nothing new or "secret" here other than trade secrets which are obviously already known by people who are already doing it. I think only a tutorial DVD could be a better introduction to the act of doing the work than this book. If you just want a book of designs, look at every other book & magazine on the shelf, this is the only one I've ever seen which shows actual techniques.
