A must-have for vocalists, July 29, 2009
This review is from: Advanced Vocal Technique Middle Voice, Placement, Styles BK/CD (Essential Concepts) (Sheet music)
For those who want to take their singing to the next level, this particular book is a map to success. It's easy-to-understand and designed in a way that helps you collect in your mind the steps to becoming a real skilled vocalist: proper resonance and placement, bridging from chest voice to head voice, and developing power and dynamics.
I learned also that singers have off days and the voice is somethng that needs to be nourished and cared for, particulary for a Rock vocalist.
Issues like Acid Reflux are discussed which can wreak havoc particularly on a vocalist because of the use of the diaphram.
Also, there is a nice explanation of the different musical genres: Rock, Pop, R&B, etc., and the particular vocal skills needed per genre.
Another bonus is the inclusion of a practise cd with helpful exercises.
I hear that another book is slated to release soon. From these authors, (Dena Murray is a very highly regarded vocal instructor) I can't wait.

Fantastic!, June 10, 2008
This review is from: Advanced Vocal Technique Middle Voice, Placement, Styles BK/CD (Essential Concepts) (Sheet music)
One of the difficulties in learning how to use your voice properly is that you cannot see what happens physically. This book explains and illustrates as accurately as ever the way the vocal chords and the whole vocal apparatus work. The cd is full of very helpful examples for men and women to cover all needs and ranges. Simply Fantastic!

Dena has done it again, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Advanced Vocal Technique Middle Voice, Placement, Styles BK/CD (Essential Concepts) (Sheet music)
In her second book, Dena Murray (along with Tita Hutchinson) picks up where she left off in her first book, taking the beginning singer into advanced concepts. Her first book explained what not to do and presented the vocal faults most singers contend with, so it is a prerequisite for this book. This book continues on, showing the student who has learned what "not" to do, into the area of "how" to do things correctly such as support, placement of the voice, etc, with many vocal examples and exercises to guide you through her teaching style, which helps the student connect their entire vocal range into one instrument. I also like the fact that she and Tita touch on vocal health issues such as reflus, nodes, polyps, etc. If you are a fan of Dena's work and methods, you will love this book. It is easy to read and broken down and explained in a such a way as to allow the novie and professional alike to understan vocal anatomy and the methodlogy behind her voice strengthening skills. I personally know of Dena and think she's a fantastic coach. It's like she can 'see' inside the singers voice!
