5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting new molecular approach, April 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Advances in Amino Acid Mimetics and Peptidomimetics, Volume 1, Volume 1 (Hardcover)
This book presents a new domain, whose applications might be greatly increased in the coming years. Construction of peptidomimetic molecules it a useful tool for the development of new drugs. The major drawback of peptides as possible drugs is their poor bioavailability and their degradation in the body. Therefore, molecules resembling the tertiary structures of interesting peptides, but having more suitable bioavailability properties might proove very useful as candidate drugs. That is why this discipline is very promising. To date, i haven't found any text books addressing this issue, this book might be the first one. I liked the fact that its contents cover many medical domains. However, I would have liked that the authors have addressed the problem of increasing bacterial resistance, the need to develop new antibacterials, and eventually the possible role of peptidomimetics in that field. Another thing that i would have liked to find in the contents, is a brief review on the phage display technique, its potential of finding useful peptides that might serve for the construction of peptidomimetics.
