This second volume in the series "Advances in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing" has two distinct themes - Part 1: Organizational Design in CIM and Part 2: Computing Technologies in CIM. The approaches adopted within these themes reflect the rapidly evolving nature of the manufacturing environment, where the era of "quality" is near over and flexibility and customer service are assuming paramount significance. Human factors and the way in which the organization can engender and capitalize on natural human strengths is the core issue in Part 1 and four contributions have been invited to address this issue. Computing technologies in CIM, the second theme of the volume, might seem far removed from organizational issues, yet the coherence is great. The objective is the best technology/people amalgam and five contributions have been invited to tackle this issue. This second volume has encompassed the philosophy of the inaugural volume in the series: the effective use of information for the whole business - not just manufacturing and design technologies - and the necessity of understanding both the tools and techniques of CIM as well as understanding the framework in which they are to be applied. The volume and the series will be of interest to a wide number of practising scientists, researchers and professionals in applied computer science; strategic and technology management; systems science; engineering design, manufacture and production and mechanical engineering; and many others with interests in the application of information systems to manufacturing and their integration in overall business processes.
