limited uses for the NES,

This controller is pretty cool creating the arcade effect with the large angled buttons and mondo handled joystick. More often than not this is your interface in an arcade fighting game. only problem? there wasnt really a bunch of games on the NES that could really adapt to this peripheral. I remember playing final fantasy with this thing hahaha. The joystick comes in handy for prolonged D pad use...in other words this wont hurt your thumbs. It might be good on a game like top gun or something but I never had a flying game on the NES, This peripheral is not for everybody but if you want to get a "different" gaming experience out of your NES pick it up.

Nintendo's standard controllers were great until the Wii,

I know, I had to bash the Wii in the title, but the standard D pad is all you need for the NES. The Dog Bone NES controller that came with the Top-Loader is more Egronomic (sp), essentially confortable and is shaped like a SNES controller.
As for the controller, it's complicated. There are 2 cords, so you can plug it into both (2) or 1 port. The white stripe indicates player 1, the other wire can be left unused. There is a toggle switch allowing you to use the conroller for player 2 implicitly if it's plugged in (duh!). There is a slow motion button, yeah it slows down the processors of the NES, aha! "Battletoads", no! it just presses the start button at a adjustable frequency. Other features are cooler, like turbo and it's stirdy foot print, but like another review said, what game needs it? Are you going to make an arcade cabinet? Please contact your seller before buying this item. The shelf wear can dull the contacts and render the controller frustrating if it's not fully tested within a year. Enjoy, but for hardcore collectors only!
