We have three dogs & two cats & occasionally a few hundred if not thousand fleas. We use different doses to cover the whole herd.
We used Advantage when we lived in TX & it worked great. Then we moved to MO, got a new vet who sold Frontline in bulk & gave one free when you bought four. He would just fill syringes with a prescribed amout & put those in a medicine bottle. We thought, sure, whats the difference & went on as usual. The frontline is a good product & we couldnt really tell any difference so we just didnt think anymore about it. But after a few months one of our dogs started to have allergic reactions to fleas. For reasons I wont go into here, we switched Vets. Our new Vet didnt sell Frontline in bulk so we purchased the Advantage from her that came directly from the maker, Bayer. Wow, what a difference! I put in on the whole crew at 8 am & by noon the scratching & biting was almost non existent. I did a search for fleas & the ones I did find were either dead or moving so slowly they were easy to catch & kill. Two days later we have no fleas. Now I should add two things here. First, I also treated my lawn with a 10 lb bag of flea, tick & ant killer which Im sure helped. At least as far as re-infestation is concerned. Second, I suspect that the bulk Frontline that I was purchasing may have been weakened by age or the way it was stored by the Vet & transferred to me in syringes. So I would suggest that anyone thinking about purchasing in this way, think again. Lastly, my wife & I are considering using Advantage & Frontline both. Possibly switching them every other month in hopes of keeping the little buggers from developing resistance. I dont know if that will help but it couldnt hurt.

In the "old days" before Advantage and Frontline became available it was the tiresome routine of wash the dogs, spray the house and lawn with noxious chemicals and repeat. It often took an entire Saturday. These drops were a blessing. Now the Advantage seems to be losing it's effectiveness. My vet agrees, saying they need to tweek their formula. I've started using Frontline one month, then Advantage the next month. It's the only way to keep fleas away.

Our outdoor area is suffering through a major flea infestation. Having tried frontline without success, we waited some time before trying Advantage. Worked like a charm.

I tried Advantage after using another well-known topical brand that worked great on a previous dog, but didn't work well on my new dog. It is rare that I find a flea on my dog now; the occasional one is always one from the yard after she's been rolling in the grass or it's been raining. In conjuction, I bathe her weekly or every 10 days or so, and it still works great. It's well worth the money to not have fleas in the house or on the dog and then on me!

I know there are supposed to be better flea treatment products out there now but I have tried them all and Advantage works best on my 3 dogs.

Pure Advantage, No Frills,

I wish I had the guts to do a video review to show the no frills packaging from The Flea Doctor. It did not arrive in the Bayer Advantage Box as pictured in the Amazon website. A blue 4x6 ziplock plastic bag contained a plastic vial(?) with 4 ml of 9.1% imidacloprid, and instructions to use an inclosed syringe with an enclosed glass vial for storage and to extract 1 ml for each months use. An idiot-proof (that is their term) set of instructions was enclosed also with guidelines for the prohibition of use on puppies under the age of 2 months. Being a laboratory clinician, this all rather surprises me, having never purchased Advantage before. I didn't feel comfortable with the shelf life of the flea control after I were to open the vial. Most boxes of flea control have individually dispensed doses which do not expire until the date on the box, which can extend for over a year. The expiration date applies when the vial has not been opened, once it is opened, a shorter consumption date applies. In addition, this Bayer vial that is sent in The Flea Doctor's blue plastic bag does not have an expiration date on it, so I would not know if it is short dated or expired and if it would still be effective I kept it for a few months before using it. The price was great, but the product just doesn't measure up to all the standards that would match the conventional sale of Advantage.

I have used this product for my dog for years. When I first got it I was concerned if it was safe. My son in law who is a biochemist checked it out for me. He found it only attacks fleas. His reply was he wished he had discovered this.

Worked All Summer Long,
This review is from: Advantage Topical Solution Flea Treatment for Dogs 11 to 20 Pounds, 6 Applications (Misc.)
This is a really, really Great product. It worked great on my Westie. She is very active outdoors, we walk to parks, trails in the woods, and she has no fleas nor ticks ! It didn't surprise me because she had gotten No Fleas Nor Ticks last Summer either.
Highly recommend it, couldn't recommend it enough for a dog who spends lots of time outdoors. |
