St. John's College at Cambridge University is not as well known by aficionado's of English Choral music as that done in King's College, Cambridge. That is a shame. The music at St. John's is of the same caliber as that of Kings, but in a slightly different acoustical space. The differences are enough to give St. John's a distinctive sound in comparison with Kings. That sound is hauntingly beautiful. The other niche this recording fills is music for Advent. As a priest in a liturgical church, The Episcopal Church, Advent is something we try to take seriously. Yet the wider world around us often treats the period from Thanksgiving to Christmas as though it were all Christmas with many shopping venues start putting out Christmas merchandise as early as late August. It is nice to have a recording that fills the time of spiritual anticipation and longing, a reminder that all is not right with the world, but that we nonetheless live in hope. If you are familiar with or interested in the English Choral Tradition, this recording is an excellent addition to one's collection.
