About the Author
Malcolm Archer was educated at King Edward VII School, Lytham, the Royal College of Music, and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was organ scholar. He studied the organ with Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir and Nicolas Kynaston, and composition with Herbert Sumsion and Alan Ridout. He is a prolific composer with well over 200 published works, which receive regular performances on BBC radio and TV. Archer was formerly Organist and Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral and is now Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College. Stephen Cleobury is an English organist and conductor. He was organ scholar at St John's College, Cambridge and sub-organist of Westminster Abbey before becoming Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral in 1979. In 1982 he took up the position of Director of Music for the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, where he also teaches music. He has been conductor of Cambridge University Musical Society since 1983, and was Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers from 1995 to 2007, and Conductor Laureate from 2007.

Great Collection,

This a very helpful collection to use during the season of advent (and many selections also apply to Christmas). It contains carols, anthems, motets and arrangements of hymns that span a wide variety of cultures, musical styles, and ability.
It should be noted that the authors are English, as is the publisher and yes, many of the selections, are English.The book is laid out very much like the books in the Carols for Choirs series, except that this collection contains many motets (there are hardly any in Carols for Choirs). Liturgical (especially Episcopalian and Anglican) and concert choirs will benefit greatly from this collection. Also helpful are antiphons for the lighting of the advent wreath and the great "O" antiphons. A few things that deserve a place are missing including Gibbons' "This is the record of John" and Ord's "Adam lay ybounden." The editors say that it is easy to find these pieces, and therefore they don't need to include them, yet, no advent collection seems complete without them. Highlights include: "Canite Tuba"-Francisco Guerro "Rejoice in the Lord alway"--Anonymous Hymn arrangements by Malcolm Archer and Stephen Cleobury "Tender Shoot"--Otto Goldschmitt "There is a flow'r"--Paul Vann "E'en so, Lord Jesus"--Paul Manz
