Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The flavor of San Francisco adds to O'Marie's witty sequel to A Novena For Murder, which marked the debut of Sr. Mary Helen. In her 70s, Mary Helen is supposedly retired at Mount St. Mary College. When her timid secretary Suzanne Barnes is murdered, however, the grieving nun determines to see justice done. Her friends in the police have no leads; very little is known about the victim, who had appeared out of nowhere, seemingly, to work at the school. Taking her equally daring religious companions on visits to people in Suzanne's apartment building, Mary Helen questions the residents but gets no solid clues. It's a conference with the chaplain at Vacaville prison that confirms the sleuth's suspicions and, unluckily, puts her at the mercy of the killer later. But Mary Helen wins again and fans can look forward to continuing tales of the wily, humane, ageless "retiree."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book--shouldn't be listed as new, though!, January 3, 2002
By A Customer
I recently bought this book from Amazon, since I saw that it was published Nov. 2001. Great, I thought, a new book by Sister Carol Anne! Nope, it's an oldie (1986) with a new cover. So now I have 2 copies of the same book. Well, I'm rereading it and enjoying it again. Fortunately, at my age, my memory isn't as good as it used to be and the story seems fresh to me. Sister Carol Anne is a master storyteller and her mysteries are supreme. You can't go wrong with her books--even the second time around! :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars Advent Season, October 31, 2007
An oldie(the second) in the Sister Mary Helen series. ADVENT OF DYING is a warm read with well drawn characters. The nun is shocked to discover her secretary brutally murder when she arrives to reclaim her prayer book, which contains a mystery she wants to finish before Advent.

Police Inspector Dennis Gallagher wants her saying her rosary and off the case, but his partner Kate Murphy doesn't have the heart to tell the determined nun to mind her own business. It take all three to solve the baffling murder when they know so little about the victim.

Good read for a chilly night, maybe hidden in your prayer book cover.

Nash Black, author of TRAVELERS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

5.0 out of 5 stars ADVENT OF DYING, April 21, 2000

This review is from: Advent of Dying (Hardcover)
This book was a treat! Put the Snoop Sisters, Miss Marple, Father Dowling all together and this one is still better! Characters were well defined, had a sense of humor, all the loose ends were tied up --- bless the fiesty old nun!
